Tonka is a modern Indian restaurant just off Flinders Lane, down one of Melbourne’s iconic laneways, Duckboard Place.

Non-traditional modern Indian cuisine at Tonka revolves around honoring authentic Indian techniques while reimagining them with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and a dash of creative flair. At Tonka we celebrate the vibrancy of Indian flavours complimented by our award winning w**e list and delivered by our experienced and passionate team. Tonka opened in 2013 and is the proud sister to Coda restaurant, a short walk away. Since their inception, both restaurants have received the Age Good Food Guide’s ‘Hat Award’ every year. While bookings are highly recommended we also have an area available for walk-in patrons. For those looking for a cocktail and a relaxed meal we have a substantial menu in our bar, Thali.

In just over two months, Tonka will say goodbye to our home at Duckboard Place, but this is not a final goodbye. To celebrate this incredible venue and thank everyone who has made Tonka what it is today, we’re bringing back some much-loved classics. Come and join us for one more meal in this very special space.

As we enter our final months at Duckboard Place, a few forever Tonka favourites will begin returning to the menu to celebrate this incredible venue and the dishes that have shaped its story.

A few dishes making a comeback include burrata with toasted cumin seed and coriander relish, yellowfin tuna with pomegranate, ponzu and horseradish, and the fried cauliflower with garam masala yoghurt, mint and chilli, with more old favourites still to be rediscovered.

Confit duck leg with Mangalorean curry, preserved dates and walnuts.

Light yet satisfying, with deep savoury flavour from the curry, subtle sweetness from the dates and texture from the walnuts. A dish made for spring, especially with naan to catch every last bit of sauce.

The time has come to say goodbye to our beloved Tonka and it is hard to put into words just what this incredible journey has meant to us.

Almost 15 years ago, we signed the lease to this magical space, hidden down Duckboard Place. Taking our own refined, unconventional approach to Indian-inspired dining, in a laneway few people knew how to find, was a leap of faith. We could never have imagined the friendships, celebrations and memories that would fill this room. So many of you have become part of Tonka’s story and ours.

Knowing that the end of our lease is approaching, we have been looking at other spaces and will continue to do so, but for now we are saying goodbye to our current home.

As 2026 draws to a close, let’s celebrate this amazing venue. Tonka’s last dinner service will be on 31 December. Until then, we would love to welcome you back to share a meal, raise a glass and celebrate everything Tonka is and has been.

To our extraordinary team, our wonderful suppliers and every guest who has joined us along the way, thank you for believing in Tonka and helping bring it to life.

Our journey at Coda is getting even more exciting, with big plans for its next chapter and news we cannot wait to share with you. Stay tuned.
