Did you love Damsel in this Dress at the Texas Renaissance Festival last year as much as we did? If so, then you're in for a treat, because a little possum told us that you'll be seeing even MORE from them this year! We caught up with owner Michelle to learn all about , which will be located at booth # 690SP by the Dove Meadow Stage!
👑What's the name of the booth?
🌮Possum Taco: Pouches & Plush
👑What inspired you to expand?
🌮 I grew up on the craft festival circuit, going and setting up booths with my amazing and talented mom. She was the kind of mom who would do handmade gifts for all of our birthdays and holidays. For Christmas one year, She literally made me a little bunny family complete with tiny little hand stitched dresses. My sister got a mouse family! That is the kind of dream world I grew up in. I love strange little creatures. My sister and I went on to sew our own toys and that went on for YEARS! Forming this company is basically like finishing what 6-year-old me STARTED!
I think about the nurturing love my mom poured into those handmade gifts, and I hope that when someone adopts one of our little possums, frogs, pickles, tacos, or turkey legs, they feel a tiny piece of that same joy. Sometimes all it takes is one ridiculous little friend to remind you that the world is still full of whimsy.
👑...Why on earth is it called Possum Taco?!
🌮 Haha. So possums are like the sworn enemy of my family clan. They decapitated so many chickens on our farm growing up! I'm pretty sure that our family crest has a picture of a knight vanquishing a possum. I loved the idea of making it a mascot. We also sell funny little beady-eyed anthropomorphic food like you'd buy at a Renaissance Festival. I wanted people to know that we did both animals AND food. And yet no animals were harmed in the making of these crafts!!
👑Are you still selling corsets?
🌮Absolutely! Damsel in this Dress is still going strong and isn't going anywhere. Possum Taco is simply our slightly unhinged little sister booth. You'll still find our handcrafted corsets, skirts, blouses, and Renaissance clothing at Damsel, while Possum Taco is dedicated to handcrafted plush companions and wearable pouches.
👑What sort of items do you sell?
🌮Possum Taco is full of handcrafted plush creatures, belt pouches, fairy-tale friends, forest critters, emotional support vegetables, anthropomorphic feast foods, and all manner of colorful oddities.
If it looks like it wandered out of an enchanted forest... or a medieval kitchen...I think this is what happens when you are raised by The Ye Olde Muppets.
👑Are they functional or just cute?
🌮Many of our critters are functional belt pouches that can carry your phone, wallet, keys, or festival treasures!
Everything has sturdy snap hook hardware to clip onto belts, pouches or waistbands! Even if they solely function as "emotional support" plushies, then we have served humanity!
👑Anything else you'd like people to know?
🌮Every Possum Taco creation is handcrafted by the same team behind Damsel in this Dress using many of the same beautiful upholstery fabrics, quality linings, and sturdy construction techniques we've trusted for decades.
We believe whimsical things deserve to be made well enough to become lifelong companions.
Our greatest hope is that you'll leave our booth with something that makes you laugh every time you see it. If we catch you triumphantly shouting, "HUZZAH FOR THE TIPPER!" while waving a plush turkey leg through the lanes of the Texas Renaissance Festival, we'll know we've done our job.
