When Hotel Sorrento opened in 1909, architect Harlan Thomas dressed its Italianate façade in patterned brickwork, sweeping arches, and richly detailed terra cotta.

It’s 1930, and behind Sorrento’s doors, Seattle socialites and university students are sharing one rather charming address.

One wing belonged to hotel guests enjoying rooftop jazz and dining in the Dunbar Room, while Seattle University students made themselves at home across the hall. For nearly a decade, Sorrento played host to this unlikely mix of guests.
