What's Changed?

When we announced our plans to step away, our intention really was to close up shop.

Since then, we've been overwhelmed by the support, encouragement and kind words. Combined with our genuine love of poultry, we realised we weren't quite ready to walk away completely.

So yes... we're still here! We're just doing things a little differently.

To create a better work-life balance, we've significantly reduced our stock levels. We both have other full time work commitments, while also caring for our flock, so scaling back allows us to continue doing what we love without burning ourselves out.

We still have poultry, feed and supplies available, however weekday collections will be limited (because we work). Weekend collections are our main pickup times.

You may have also noticed we're no longer attending poultry auctions. While we enjoyed being involved, stepping away has given us more time to focus on our flock and the customers who continue to support us.

One thing you may notice is that it could take us a little longer to reply to messages. That's simply because life happens, and we're fitting everything around full-time work and the farm. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding.

Thank you for sticking with us. We may be a little smaller than before, but our passion for poultry hasn't changed one bit.

Little ladies, colourful surprises
The Chicken Lady is letting go of a few of her bantam gals.

These gorgeous bantam ladies may be little, but they lay some of the prettiest eggs around. Soft blues, greens and creamy whites that make every egg collection a little more exciting.

Prefer white eggs?

We have around 30 Leghorn Hybrid pullets, now 15 weeks old and ready for their new homes.

Leghorn Hybrids are renowned for their excellent feed-to-egg conversion and are fantastic producers of large white eggs. They usually begin laying from around 14 weeks of age, but with the colder winter weather I would allow a month.

I'll be doing a run into Albany this weekend, time to be determined.

What we've been doing

Bird flu is on every poultry enthusiast's mind.

While the risk can never be completely eliminated, good biosecurity greatly reduces the risk, and that's something we've always taken seriously.

Over the past couple months we've:

- Repaired and checked our roof netting to help keep wild birds out.
- Reduced free-ranging and increased fresh green feed inside the pens.
- Increased probiotics to support gut health while birds spend more time enclosed.
- Expanded our water storage to reduce reliance on natural water sources.
- Tightened access to our property even further.

Many of these measures aren't new. Our pens were designed to keep predators and wildlife out, we carry out annual deep cleans of our pens and shelters, and we've always maintained strict farm biosecurity. These recent changes have simply strengthened the systems we already had in place.

We are fortunate that our guinea fowl do an excellent job of discouraging wild birds from landing around our property. That said, bird flu isn't just a risk from wild birds. Predators or scavengers that have come into contact with infected birds/carcasses could also pose a risk if they're able to access poultry enclosures, which is why secure fencing has always been a priority for us.

We'll continue following the latest advice and adapt our practices whenever needed. Our goal, as always, is to provide healthy, happy birds and reassure our customers that we're doing everything reasonably possible to protect our flock.
