This evening's Rosé on the Roof was everything a summer gathering should be. Perfect weather, wonderful company, French-inspired wines and hors d'oeuvres, and a Terrace filled with great conversation and laughter.

Inspired by the Tour de France, Wine Director Ben Mehl curated a memorable journey through some of France's celebrated rosé regions—from Sancerre and Bandol to Tavel and the Rhône Valley—creating a fitting toast to a beautiful Pittsburgh summer evening.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for another fully-subscribed Rosé on the Roof. We look forward to raising a glass with you again soon.

Celebrating Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, Union troops reached Galveston, Texas, with word that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were free — over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

The delay wasn't just distance; in many accounts, word was deliberately withheld so plantation owners could extract one more harvest. Texas was the last Confederate state to receive the news, and that day became Juneteenth.

For more than a century, it remained largely a tradition within Black communities — generations gathering each year for music, food, and remembrance.

This tradition is beautifully captured in this 1900 photograph from an Emancipation Day celebration in Austin's "East Woods". In 2021, Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday, bringing that long tradition into wider national observance. Today, it stands as a day honoring freedom, resilience, and the pursuit of equality.

On June 10, the History Society enjoyed a memorable evening at the historic Union Trust Building for From Arcade to Empire: A Tour and History of the Union Trust Building.

Guests explored remarkable spaces rarely open to the public, enjoyed a reception with food and bar service catered by Ritual House, a Union Trust Building tenant, and learned about the building’s rich history and Pittsburgh’s financial and industrial legacy through presentations by Property Manager Steven Kasunich and historian Mark Samber.

We extend our sincere thanks to The Davis Companies and the Union Trust Building for sponsoring the evening; Assistant Property Manager Jeanette Evans for coordinating the event and conducting tours; Lead Engineer Dan Marshall and Assistant Lead Engineer Buzz McWhirter for sharing their expertise and helping bring the building’s history to life.

Today marks the 153rd anniversary of the Duquesne Club, founded on June 11, 1873.

From its founding, the Club was conceived first and foremost as a social club — even as it became the setting for some of the most consequential business connections in Pittsburgh's history. That social spirit remains very much alive today, expressed through the communities our members have built together: the Art Society, Bourbon & Beer Society, Culinary Society, History Society, Literary Society, Rod & Gun Society, and Wine Society.

On this anniversary, we are grateful to the dedicated staff who make Club life possible every day — from housekeeping, engineering, and the hotel to the banquets and events teams, the Health & Fitness team, and to the kitchen, which in so many ways is the beating heart of the Club.

Most of all, we thank our members. Your camaraderie and dedication have been the reason the Duquesne Club exists and thrives — from the very beginning, today, and in all the years ahead.

The Bourbon & Beer Society kicked off Terrace season this evening with a memorable tasting featuring standout pours from New Riff, Rabbit Hole, and Larceny, paired with passed hors d’oeuvres and lively conversation among fellow bourbon enthusiasts.

Though the rain moved the gathering from the Terrace to the Billiard Room, it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the evening. Thank you to all who joined us for a wonderful start to the season.
