Now that it's getting colder out, we're leaning on comfort food to get us through the days.

Warm, flaky sausage rolls fresh out of the oven. Sliders small enough to share, though most people don't. An Irish coffee to warm you up from the inside out. Or an Irish Penicillin, named for the honey and ginger in it, the same things you'd reach for when you feel a cold coming on.

Today we drink to our namesake, Jonathan Swift, who died on this day in 1745.

He gave us Gulliver's Travels, which turns 300 on October 28, and with it the words Lilliputian and yahoo.

In Dublin, he was also known as the Drapier. Writing under that name in 1724, he published a series of letters that stopped a scheme to flood Ireland with cheap copper coins. A reward was offered to anyone who could name the author. No one ever claimed it, even though it was widely known to be Swift.

He left most of his estate to found St. Patrick's Hospital, the first psychiatric hospital built in Ireland. It's still caring for people today.

We could go on, but we'd rather have a pint in his honor.

If a pornstar martini is your usual order, we recommend the Love and Folly. We make ours with Minke, an Irish vodka from Clonakilty Distillery in West Cork. Most Irish vodkas are distilled from grain, but Minke is made from whey, using milk from the Scully family farm, which has been in the family for nine generations. It gives the vodka a creamy texture that suits the vanilla and passionfruit. The name comes from the minke whales that swim off the coast nearby.

Funny enough, the name "Irish red ale" was rarely used in Ireland itself. It caught on in the United States as a way to describe this style of reddish-amber ale.

Have you ever noticed the long-necked instrument with the teardrop body? That's an Irish bouzouki. It started out as a Greek instrument and came into Irish music in the mid-1960s, when Johnny Moynihan of the folk group Sweeney's Men started playing it and changed the tuning to fit.

Seisiún every Tuesday from 8 to 11 PM.
