Deep Winter in Mid Winter

Greetings Star Grass Customers. I hope you are well bundled or otherwise warmed on such a cold day. Days like this are hard to get through everywhere and are certainly no less so on the pasture. At least the sun is shining. That always helps. I'm always kind of amazed at the hardiness of all of us on days like these. It truly can be a harsh world out there.

I have sent current winter egg share customers an invoice for the second half of the winter egg share season. Thank you so much for your support of this farm. Looking forward to spring along with all of you!

Deliveries will continue on Tuesdays (generally morning delivery for Ames, afternoons for Des Moines). The remaining delivery dates for this season are:

I apologize for the change in the delivery schedule. If a later delivery time will not work for you, please reach out and we will determine a delivery that works for you.

Invoices Due Today!!

Please note, our web address has changed slightly. Going forward please use https://stargrassfarm.square.site

Good evening, Star Grass customers.

Thanks to everyone who signed up for the second half of the Summer Egg Share. If you haven't signed up yet, you still have time to get on the list for next Tuesday's delivery.

***There seemed to be a problem with the website as multiple people were getting an error message when trying to purchase their egg share. I have sent invoices to everyone who signed up for the first half of the Summer Egg Share. Please pay now to ensure delivery on Tuesday. If you've decided not to participate in the second half, please reach out and let me know.

For those of you who haven't yet tried the egg share, we have three different options for you to purchase a share of our eggs. Earlier this year we billed customers half of the share cost at the time of sign up and now it's time to bill for the second half.

Please make you payments for the second half of the Summer Egg Share by July 27th, 2025.

Your 3 options for Egg Share this year are:

- Purchase the second half of the Market Egg Share (24 dozen) for $87.5 and receive one dozen of our farm fresh pastured eggs each week at the Ames Main Street Farmers Market, from Saturday July 26th, 2025, to Saturday October 11th, 2025. No need to worry about eggs selling out before you get to market. Your share will be there to pick up whenever you get to the market. Purchase multiple shares if you would like more than one dozen per week.
Of course, customers that would rather get eggs as needed, but want to ensure they are at the market when they get there, can always order online for pick up at the market.

- Employees of Iowa DHHS can purchase the second half of the Lucas Egg Share for $95 and will receive two dozen eggs every other week, delivered to the Lucas building from July 29th, 2025 to October 7th, 2025.

- All customers will be able to purchase the second half of the Home Delivery Egg Share for $107.50. Home Delivery Egg Share (24 dozen) customers will receive two dozen eggs every other week, delivered Tuesdays from July 29th, 2025 to October 7th, 2025.

As always....
All customers can always order 5 dozen or more eggs as needed for home delivery any time through the website. Remember, orders of 5 dozen or more include delivery at no extra charge!

If you'd like to purchase two or more dozen at a time and don't mind picking up from the farm, reach out via text or email and we'll arrange a time for you to pick up.

Greetings Star Grass customers.

Wow, what a lot of rain! We've been, at times, so dry recently that I'd almost forgot what normal rainfall looks like. The rain hasn't impeded progress on the farm, which is great. We're in the process of growing some of our capacity to more easily manage a larger flock. Installing a larger feed bin will allow us to purchase more feed at a time. Buying in bulk will save some on the cost of the feed and also save manual labor of moving and stacking 3000+ pounds of feed every few weeks. While the source of the feed will change, you can be sure that the new feed will be the same high quality, NON-GMO mash that our birds are used to receiving.

A special thanks to my neighbor Bob Carney. He helps me out with so much. I'm sure he's often thinking "What the heck is this guy doing?" - but still helps me anyway. Here he is offloading the feed bin. Neighbors are great and we're lucky to have so many!

Many thanks to everyone who signed up for the second half of the Summer Egg Share. If you haven't signed up yet, you still have time to get on the list for next Tuesday's delivery.

This has been one of the most normal spring and summer seasons I can remember for quite a while. Many beautiful days and evenings and plenty of rain. New Egg Share slots are open as well, so if you'd like to start getting the freshest, best tasting eggs on the planet - Sign up today. Egg production has been good, and we anticipate plenty of production as we head into Fall.

Ready for Market?

Please note, our web address has changed slightly. Going forward please use https://stargrassfarm.square.site

Greetings Star Grass customers.

Wow, less than a week before the first Ames Main Street Farmers Market! It never ceases to amaze me how fast the restful winter flies by and we are again greeted with the hope and bustle of Spring. We are certainly ready for the 2025 market season to begin and hope that you are as well. It will be great to reconnect with you all and will also be exciting to have access to all the great food that central Iowa's growers will be hauling in. For us, the first market of the season will bring carrots harvested and stored from last October, fresh asparagus and of course, farm fresh pastured eggs.

Special thanks to everyone who participated in the Winter Egg Share. The final winter share delivery was completed Tuesday 4/22/25. We do plan to offer the winter share again at the end of the 2025 market season.

Thanks to all who have already signed up for egg shares for the summer season! Today is the last day to sign up for eggs all summer, so please let us know if you'd like a share. Signing up today ensures you are added to our delivery route or to the list of share pick-ups at the farmers market.

This year, we'll have three different options for you to purchase a share of our eggs. We'll do the same for the upcoming Egg Share season with half due by April 27th, 2025 and the other half billed July 20th, 2025.

- Employees of Iowa DHHS can purchase a Lucas Egg Share for $190 and will receive two dozen eggs every other week, delivered to the Lucas building Tuesdays from May 6th, 2025 to October 7th, 2025.

- All customers will be able to purchase a Home Delivery Egg Share for $215.00. Home Delivery Egg Share (24 dozen) customers will receive two dozen eggs every other week, delivered Tuesdays from May 6th, 2025 to October 7th, 2025.

Eggs all summer!

Greetings Star Grass customers.

Please note, our web address has changed slightly. Going forward please use stargrassfarm.square.site

I never quite know how much to share with you all about the happenings around the farm. Way back when I used to write a weekly newsletter for the CSA farm that I managed, I always felt a little uneasy sharing a full accounting of the machinations of the farm. Mostly because there is always something going awry on most farms in a given week of the year and since we all get enough bad news already, why add to the pile?? However, some of the unease comes from not really knowing how much people want to know about how the sausage is made, so to speak. Sometimes though, an insurmountable problem arises and I feel it is important to share. When our well became unusable, this was indeed bad news for us and created a problem for the farm that impacted every aspect of what we do, both immediately and for the long term. Since this affects us, it also may have some impact on you. You probably know already that growing food for our tables is a water intensive endeavor. And since most of you purchase your water from a utility, you may also understand that purchasing water from a rural utility makes the cost of growing that food too high for our farm. In short, what this means is Star Grass Farm will need to pivot away from producing food that requires large amounts of supplemental water. Unfortunately, that means we won't be producing many or most of the vegetable and fruit crops you've come to expect from us. Our famers market stand this year will again be at the Ames Main Street Farmers Market, although we will mostly just have eggs for sale along with the occasional veggie crops. We will still produce some crops like tomatoes using our high tunnels, but will need to focus on crops that require much less water and re-think what our farm could look like going forward. The good news is that producing eggs does not require lots and lots of water, so that part of our business will persist and will also need to grow. We'll focus on continuing to produce "some of the best damn eggs in the state" by feeding high quality feed and consistently moving our flocks on to greener pastures. We have tried to produce not just good, but really great eggs for you and your family and we hope you notice the difference.

This year, we'll have three different options for you to purchase a share of our eggs. Over the winter we billed customers half of the share cost at the time of purchase and the other half at the mid point of the season. It worked great because it provided a way for us to help gauge our seasonal demand while also allowing for some flexibility if a customer's needs changed or if we'd have had something interrupt our production. We'll do the same for the upcoming Egg Share season with half due by April 27th, 2025 and the other half billed July 20th, 2025.
