By far, my favorite wedding dessert bar request is for a traditional Pennsylvania cookie table. I’ve had the opportunity to do a few of these, and I absolutely adore setting them up. It reminds me of that scene from Hook with all the pretend food, only what you see here is not part of your imagination. The best part? The couple provided customized go bags for guest to fill to their hearts content. This dessert bar in particular consisted of just under 1000 cookies and bars.

I always get a little nervous when customers send me AI pictures as inspiration, but the fun part is definitely being able to turn it into my own version. I have even started embracing the idea of using AI to occasionally draft up concepts while on a consultation call, especially for quick turn around orders. I’m not much of a drawer, so being able to have a tool that can turn my vision into something a customer can see is very helpful. As a business owner, and cake artist, I always ensure that my customer knows that these renderings are just for examples of ideas I have swirling in my head and I always emphasize that any picture shared with me (even ones that are not AI generated) are only ever used as inspiration.

It’s a painful time nowadays to see so many talented creators clearly using AI in their promotions. You have my promise to NEVER publish a picture that is not 100% mine. Curious how others feel about this.

This throwback video to me showing my daughter (now 8) her 4th birthday cake is exactly what it feels like to own a business and be a mom.

I can recall how exhausted I was at this moment. The extra hours I stayed up to make sure I completed all my customer orders, as well as her birthday cake. The energy I found to scrub clean the kitchen and the rest of the house, to go out and get all the supplies and decorations together for her party while also handling coffee shop and wedding cake deliveries. The disappointment I probably felt for missing a coffee date with a friend or not getting to work out. I just wanted to show her that I could make the cake she asked me for.

I remember how tired I was in this exact moment, but I will never forget that joy in her face. The excitement in her voice. I remember forgetting my exhaustion and feeling like the best mom in the world. That’s the thing about momhood, even when you are hanging by a thread, one good feeling from your tiny human and it brings you back to life, gives you a purpose. I may be a business owner now, but I will always be a mom.

Cookies N’ Cream drip cake, because OREO didn’t pay me for an ad and I didn’t ask to use their cookies. I used Oreos though. In the buttercream, as decoration on top and the sides. I also ate some as I worked, but no, this is a cookies n’ cream cake. No copyright violations to see here.

Taking pictures of the completed wedding cake on site is vital, not only so I can share my work, but also because a picture provides a crucial second viewpoint. A misplaced flower, a knick in the buttercream, a shadow in the background. In this case, when I took the picture, I immediately noticed two things that caused me to pull out my buttercream and piping bag and pivot a little. Can you spot what I changed in the second photo to make the first photo the actual completed cake? Hint: one of the changes was rotating the cake so the top and bottom arches lined up (I accidentally had the back of the cake in the front).
