Earlier this summer our students visited Shorefront Legacy. Shorefront Legacy is an organization that houses all of the history of Black Evanstonians, all the way back to when they originally migrated to the area. Students took a bus tour with Laurice Bell, which focused on famous black landmarks throughout Evanston. The tour ended at their facility where the students were able to see the artifacts that have been collected. This provided students with the unique experience to learn through photos, letters, buttons, and more.

Curt’s Cafe started with a dream. Our founder, Susan Trieschman, had a vision which has grown into the organization it is today. As a result, she has helped hundreds of at-risk youths. To highlight her contribution to the community, the Evanston Round Table wrote an article looking back on her career and the impact she has had on many people lives.

Our Student Spotlight for August is Omar!

Omar has been working at Curt's for almost 8 months. He first came to us from Thresholds and found himself working both Front of House and Back of House alongside other students and staff. In the beginning he was quite shy but has learned great communication skills and is known to be a good conversationalist.

To Omar, working at Curt's is very satisfying, and sees feeding people as humbling and rewarding work. He is happy to be a part of our team, not just to have a job, but knowing he is making others proud. Especially those who supported him who he does not want to let down. In his own words Omar says, “I love it here and I don’t use that word lightly.”

Omar has improved greatly during his time here. He is reliable, hardworking, and loves to learn new things. You can often find Omar helping wherever needed or enjoying his favorite lunchtime meal, a buffalo chicken and cheese toasty with basil mayo.

Make sure to say hi to Omar next time you stop by Curt's Cafe.
