At The Roosevelt Room, it’s the people who make the experience—and this month’s spotlight is on Jessica Barragato.

Originally from Rochester, New York, and raised in Houston, Jessica came to Austin to attend Concordia University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Public Health. Before joining the hospitality industry, she worked in ABA therapy and later with Austin ISD, supporting students in the public school system.⁠

Jessica joined The Roosevelt Room team in October 2025 and has supported the space in several roles, including hostess, floor support, and maintenance, helping keep things running smoothly for both guests and staff.⁠

Outside of work, she enjoys paddleboarding, rollerblading, traveling with family, and spending time with her daughter. She also has a hidden talent; she’s been singing since childhood, though she usually keeps it reserved for close friends and family.⁠

This Memorial Day, we raise a glass with intention.⁠

Long before the modern cocktail renaissance, there was the Julep—one of America’s earliest expressions of hospitality. As far back as 1784, the Brandy Julep was already being enjoyed on this side of the Atlantic: simple, refreshing, and quietly refined. Our version stays true to those early origins, blending 1840, Hamilton Pot Still Rum, Mint, Demerara Syrup, and Seasonal Berries for a bright, aromatic take on a true American classic. A drink built not to impress, but to gather, to slow down, and to share.⁠

Today, that spirit feels especially important.⁠

Memorial Day isn’t just the unofficial start of summer—it’s a moment to pause and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country. Created by Hugo Ensslin at the Wallick Hotel in New York and first published in his 1916 book Recipes for Mixed Drinks, this cocktail is a study in balance and restraint, built long before “classic” was a category of its own.

One of our newest seasonal featured indulgences, the Washed Up created by our Head Bartender, Armando Garza (), is a clarified, freezer martini-style take on the classic Piña Colada that feels right at home as the weather warms.

Playing on the literal translation of piña colada - meaning strained pineapple - the cocktail fully embraces the concept via a coconut milk wash that is used to clarify and soften the structure, turning pineapple and lime into something smoother and more lifted, while layered vermouths and subtle rum accents provide depth and balance. It's coconut milk-washed and served "up" like a martini, hence the name.... get it?!

After nearly nine years behind the bar and at the heart of The Roosevelt Room, Matthew Korzelius has officially turned the page to his next chapter.⁠

Matty’s journey is one few will replicate. He started as a bartender, proving himself not only as a technician of the craft but also as a leader of people. From there, he progressed to Assistant Bar Manager, Bar Manager, Assistant General Manager, and ultimately became a Business Partner and Co-Owner. At every step, he didn’t just rise—he redefined it.⁠

What made Matty so special wasn’t only his talent behind the bar or his understanding of hospitality, but his ability to understand people. He is one of the most empathetic and emotionally intelligent people we’ve worked with. He had a way of seeing the real you, cutting through noise and meeting people where they were. That ability shaped our culture and created a real connection across the team.⁠

If you’ve ever heard one of Matty’s speeches, you know their impact. Thoughtful and intentional, he had a gift for saying exactly what needed to be said in a way that stayed with you long after. More than once, his words brought a room to a standstill—and a few of us to tears.⁠

Of course, there’s more to Matty than meets the eye: a karaoke voice that could steal any staff party, a deep devotion to the Buffalo Bills, and a questionable love for Cucumber-Lime Gatorade. Those quirks are part of his legacy, too.⁠

While this marks the end of his day-to-day role, Matty will remain involved over the coming months to help ensure a smooth transition—a reflection of his professionalism and care for what he helped build. His impact on The Roosevelt Room is lasting, not just in what he created, but in how he made people feel.⁠

We’re grateful for everything he gave to the business, the team, and all of us personally. Proud of him, thankful for the journey, and excited for what comes next.⁠

Created in 2016 by our co-owners and founders - Justin Lavenue and Dennis Gobis - the goal was simple: craft a seemingly unassuming cocktail that surprises with every sip. Perfecting this intricate libation took six months and ultimately required a two-step clarification process.⁠
