Family and Friends:
Twelve years ago our team had the idea to open a Mexican food version of Galaxy Cafe in the Clarksville neighborhood near our second Galaxy Cafe location. The three of us partnered with a chef from Mexico City and a chef from Whole Foods. Together we created our take on fresh, modern, Mexican food.
Over the Past fifteen years we have opened five different Galaxy Cafes, Zocalo Cafe and purchased the iconic Top Notch Hamburgers. Our company is still growing strong and we have exciting plans for continued expansion. Galaxy Cafe in Steiner Ranch opened in February, Zocalo Cafe Austin Airport will open next Fall and
the second Top Notch Hamburgers will open in Hutto next Winter. These upcoming locations along with other Galaxy and Top Notch plans will require our undivided attention. Unfortunately at this time, Zocalo Cafe on West Lynn is not part of our future plans.
ZOCALO CAFE IS CLOSED FOR BUSINESS effective Friday March 29th.
Austin-based, Mexico City-inspired taco joint TACO FLATS has purchased Zocalo Cafe, located at 1110 W Lynn St, Austin, TX. Taco Flats owner Simon Madera will assume the Zocalo entity and will convert it to a Taco Flats location. The current owners of Zocalo Cafe, Chris Courtney, Kelly Chappell, and Jay Bunda, sold the restaurant to focus on the expansion of their other restaurants, Galaxy Cafe and Top Notch Hamburgers. Courtney, Chappell and Bunda will stay on as minority partners of Taco Flats Clarksville.
“We are beyond proud of what we have built with Zocalo Cafe,” said founder Kelly Chappell. ”As we grow our hospitality group we realized that we needed to give the Top Notch expansion and new Galaxy locations all of our attention. Simon has built a wonderful restaurant with Taco Flats and we could not ask for a better partner to take over the space.”
“I recognize Zocalo Cafe as a beloved neighborhood cafe and I don’t want the community to lose that overnight,” says Taco Flats owner Simon Madera. He wants to keep the restaurant operating while he finalizes plans to bring his neighborhood bar approach to the historic Clarksville Neighborhood.
*Taco Flats will begin serving their menu starting this Monday. They will open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. On July 1st they will temporarily close for a remodel which should take 2 months. Taco Flats Clarksville will feature authentic, Mexico City-inspired tacos, more than 20 beers on tap and a full bar.
