The doors may be closed for winter, but Ratanui is far from asleep.

This is the season for the jobs guests rarely see: checking, polishing, planning, tasting, tweaking and getting every corner ready for October.
With only 10 rooms, the little details matter - because when we reopen, we want the Lodge to feel less like somewhere you've checked into and more like somewhere you've been expected.

For now, Golden Bay is enjoying its winter exhale.

Some people plan a Golden Bay trip around beaches and walking tracks.

Others notice our gin menu and suddenly become very organised.

When the bar reopens in October, the good glassware comes back out, the ice starts clinking again and we're back to the serious business of deciding which gin suits the evening.

One of our favourite things about Ratanui is that 'local' isn't a line in a brochure.

The mugs in our rooms are made by Nelson artist Sue Newitt. The coffee inside them comes from Nelson-based Sublime Coffee. Around the Lodge you'll also find work by Golden Bay artist Peter Geen.

Small details, perhaps. But put enough thoughtful local details together and a room starts to feel connected to the place outside it.

And yes, we take the first coffee of the morning quite seriously.

Today marks Matariki - the rising of the star cluster that signals the Māori New Year, and a national public holiday here in Aotearoa.

It's a time for three things: remembering those who've passed, celebrating where we are now, and setting intentions for what's ahead.

For us, that feels fitting.

We're mid-way through our own quiet season, getting ready for what spring brings, and there's something grounding about marking that alongside the rest of the country.
