Nothing quite embodies the importance of surf culture and community spirit in Tofino like the town's response to O'Neill's 2009 Coldwater Classic.

The date was October 31st, 2009, the final day of the competition. The conditions were particularly rough but even above the pounding surf and howling wind, it was impossible to drown out the cheers of thousands of locals crowded along Chesterman Beach.

It's not hard to imagine why the streets of Tofino were empty and nearly every business shuttered when Tofino local, Pete Devries, was competing for the win.

And after entering the Classic as a Canadian wildcard, Pete ended up the champion. Not only did he win Canada's first professional international surf competition but he did it on the very beach he grew up on, surrounded by an immense outpouring of support from his hometown.

Truly a monumental day for a local legend and for a town as deeply connected to surf as Tofino.

As we head into Fall and the days grow shorter, the sun setting a little earlier each evening, dinner at The Pointe Restaurant comes with an extra dose of golden-hour glow 🌅

Now that B.C. is on permanent Daylight Saving Time, we’re looking forward to more dinners enjoyed alongside the sunset.

Behind every meticulously kept corner of the Inn, from pristinely made beds, to carefully arranged vanities, to every single crisp white linen, are the hands of our Housekeeping team.

In honour of it being International Housekeepers Week, we want to take a moment to share our gratitude for every single Room Attendant, Laundry Attendant, Houseperson, and Housekeeping Leader we are lucky enough to have as part of our team at the Wickaninnish Inn.

While much of their work happens behind the scenes, each member of our Housekeeping team leaves a wake of perfection that is beyond tangible.

A first look at a few of the works featured in this year’s West Coast Visions juried art exhibit, now on display in the Henry Nolla Gallery.

The 4th Annual Juried Exhibit runs from September 9 to October 9, bringing together a collection of works inspired by the West Coast and the many ways it can be seen and interpreted.

Some of the Inn’s most distinctive details were shaped by hand, one adze stroke at a time.

Henry Nolla’s craftsmanship is woven into the character of the Wickaninnish Inn, from the cedar doors to the textured beams and mantels throughout the property. Though Henry passed away in 2004, his presence remains in the work he left behind, and in both the Carving Shed and Gallery that bear his name.

We would have loved for Henry to be here to see what became of the Inn he helped make so incredibly beautiful. We’re grateful that his master craftsmanship still surrounds us today and that West Coast artists he inspired still continue to create in the Shed he built just down Chesterman Beach.
