Fifteen Hedland Children Left Alone: A System That Continues to Fail Aboriginal Families

“This system failure meant that victim survivor safety was not being optimised. It resulted in some victim survivors not receiving the supports they should have been getting.”

What is needed now is not another inquiry, but meaningful action. Aboriginal Family Legal Services stands ready to work with the Department of Communities, the Department of Housing and Works, WA Police, the WA Ombudsman and Aboriginal community leaders to ensure that what has occurred in South Hedland does not occur again. The safety of Aboriginal children depends on a system that listens, responds, and acts, not one that waits for crises before engaging.

Our Port Hedland team has been busy, because some conversations are too important not to have.

Last week, Naomi and the team joined the Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation office in Port Hedland to deliver a Community Legal Education (CLE) session for staff and Work Ready Program participants. We came ready to talk about AFLS services and the different forms of family and domestic violence (FDV), and this group came ready with the questions!

The session quickly became a two-way conversation, with plenty of participation, thoughtful questions and open discussion around FDV, recognising different forms of violence and knowing where to turn for support. Following that, it was on to the Bloodwood Tree Men’s Group for another CLE session and another opportunity to keep these important conversations moving.

Two days. Two groups. Plenty of conversation. One important message: knowledge helps communities know where support is available.

Staying cool in Kununurra! 😎

Our Kununurra Community Engagement Worker and Family Advocate spent last Tuesday staying cool in the shade while attending the annual AGM hosted by the Kimberley Land Council, Aarnja, Kimberley Language Resource Centre and KALAAC. The team spent a few hours sharing information about our services, pamphlets and merchandise with community members and in the Kununurra heat, it’s no surprise the AFLS fans and hats were a hit!

It was a great opportunity to connect with Elders, community leaders, members and local services, with important conversations around Country, community priorities, towns and remote communities, and the programs and projects supporting our people.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by for a yarn and helped make the day such a valuable community gathering. 🖤💛❤️

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day 🖤💛❤️

In one of Australia’s most remote communities, AFLS team member Frances helped deliver a special event filled with creativity, kindness and connection.
The children got creative with drawings to design their own shirts, filling them with positive and kind words, before finishing the day with some well-earned cupcakes! 🧁🎨

A great day celebrating our children and creating space for positivity, creativity and community. Great work Frances!
