Last November, wandered through our Festival of Roses and captured the garden in all its beauty, with roses in every shade from soft blush to vivid pink and gold at the height of their bloom. Thank you for sharing your day with us, Kathryn 🌹

This year's Festival of Roses is bigger and better, with the Market Trail winding through the grounds, garden walks and talks, gin tastings, w**e and cheese platters on the lawn, and a peek inside Woolmers House.

Sunday 22 November, 10am to 4pm. Early Bird tickets are just $10, and there are only 12 days left to grab them.

A massive thank you to the incredible group of people who gave up their Sunday to volunteer at our Working Bee. We are enormously grateful.

Bee, our heritage architect, started the day by taking everyone through Woolmers Lodge and talking them through the restoration underway, which will eventually see the building open as accommodation and a wedding venue. The Lodge has been closed to visitors for many years, so this was a behind the scenes look and a dedicated tour that is not available to anyone else.

It’s a very early start this year with our first rose blooming in the Rose Garden.
Rosa xanthina ‘Canary Bird’ is a very pure yellow colour, once flowering, which can grow up to 3 metres in height.

There is an insect painted into the enamel on this vase, small enough that most people never spot it.

One piece of steel, folded back on itself. No pivot, no screw, nothing that can work loose. The bow at the top is the spring. A hand closes the blades and the steel opens them again, and that is the whole machine. Sharpened often enough and a pair like this outlasts the man holding them.

Woolmers ran ten thousand sheep. Mainly Merinos, pure and cross-bred, on land Thomas Archer took up in 1817. Every fleece came off with shears like these.

The work started at the river. The sheep were washed before shearing, and the men who did it were issued thin cotton slops for the job, because they spent the day wet. Washed sheep were penned outside to dry, then brought into the shed. The shearers worked with blades. The fleeces went to a long table to be cleaned and sorted, then up to the top floor, where a screw press worked by hand compacted them into bales. The bales left through the upper doors on a hoist, or slid down the stairs on a ramp built for the purpose. Then a wagon to Launceston. Then a ship to England.

Woolmers was delighted to welcome a group of students from TAFE into the Rose Garden earlier this month, where they undertook practical rose pruning as part of their Certificate II in Horticulture. It was a rewarding day for our gardens and for the students, and we hope it becomes an annual part of the estate calendar.

Festival Of Roses 2026 - Experience heritage in bloom 🌹

This November, the Rose Garden is in full bloom. Celebrate the season with 3,000 roses across 350 varieties in the middle of 200 years of history. The whole Estate is open for a day of wandering through colour and heritage.

Explore the Rose Garden, the grounds and all 18 original heritage buildings, then follow the Market Trail, featuring local makers. A handful of ticketed experiences are also available including guided walks with our gardeners, viewing of Woolmers House, Gin Tasting, Devonshire Tea overlooking the garden and w**e & cheese picnic platters enjoyed amongst the roses.

Early Bird tickets are $10 until 30 September, then $15 general admission.
