This afternoon, Richard Archer joined the History Talks Longford series, sharing stories of Brickendon’s past and bringing along a selection of remarkable family treasures from the archives.

Guests enjoyed a beautiful afternoon tea while taking the opportunity to view historic farm maps, photographs, World Heritage-listed convict-era diaries, and a range of personal items that have been preserved by the Archer family for generations.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the afternoon was seeing documents dating back to the 1500s. When the Archer family emigrated to Van Diemen’s Land, they quite literally packed up their lives and brought much of their history with them. More than 200 years later, some of those same records remain carefully preserved here at Brickendon.

The event was hosted by the Longford Norfolk Plains History Society. While relatively new, the society is doing outstanding work in preserving, promoting, and sharing the rich history of the Norfolk Plains region. Through events such as the History Talks Longford series, they are helping connect the community with local stories and ensuring important heritage is celebrated and remembered.

A wonderful afternoon of local history, family stories, excellent food, and a reminder that history is often found not just in buildings and landscapes, but in the objects and documents that connect generations.

We are delighted to share a progress update on the restoration of our Brick Coach House and Stables, one of the most significant conservation projects we have undertaken at Brickendon.

Every element of the project is being guided by our heritage conservation advisor Jo Lyngcoln of Heritage Conservation Management. Under her management, an exceptional team of specialists has been assembled: Greg Owen of Period Building Conservation is undertaking the structural and fabric repair works; Aidan Fleming and Leigh Thomson have completed the roof restoration; Martyn Jordan has carried out the masonry; and Peter Rigozzi is engaged for the fine joinery, conserving original doors, fittings and timber elements wherever possible.

Last week, the Longford Academy joined us and our neighbours at Woolmers Estate for their week-long conservation training intensive, bringing some of the finest heritage minds in the country to our site - including Gary Waller of G&C Waller Builders and heritage consultant David Young. The perfect place to learn from the very best.

And the building gave us all a moment to pause. For the first time since before 1950, with the dividing wall between the dairy and stables now removed, you can stand and look the full length of the building in one uninterrupted view - from the carriage room door all the way through to the stallion stall.
