The Old Rectory

The Old Rectory A boutique beach hotel from Rare Earth Retreats set in the heart of Plettenberg Bay.

Located in the heart of Plettenberg Bay, one of South Africa’s best loved coastal towns, The Old Rectory is an immaculately restored national monument built in 1777 and reimagined into an intimate boutique hotel. Eighteen stylish suites create an experience that’s private and personal, while charming architectural details, centuries of heritage and luxurious amenities make it a unique, world-class

beach escape. A spa, bar and exclusive restaurant offer enough by way of dining and leisure options that you don’t need to leave, but close proximity to the town’s attractions make exploring just as easy.

A little throwback to when this absolute flamboyance turned Plett into a pink paradise. Watch until the end for the sunset of the ages.

Yes, a group of flamingos is officially called a “flamboyance.” Perfect, right?

Exactly two years ago, the talented Rob Smith captured this breathtaking magic down at the lagoon, and we’re still not over it. What started years ago as a “fluke” visit by just two or three lost birds has turned into a seasonal tradition, with a thriving flock returning to the Keurbooms lagoon and Bitou wetlands. They spend their days flying between Poortjies and the river estuaries, chasing the tides and living their best lives.

We truly live in paradise. Drop a 🦩 if you’ve been lucky enough to spot them in the lagoon recently!

Today is Shark Awareness Day, a chance to learn a little more about one of the ocean’s most misunderstood animals. Living in Plettenberg Bay means sharing our coastline with incredible marine life, sharks included.

While it’s always important to exercise caution when enjoying the ocean, it’s equally important to recognise the vital role sharks play in keeping our marine ecosystems healthy and in balance. This time of year, from May through October, is when shark activity typically increases as white sharks return to the area to hunt around the seal colonies.

If you’re hiking Robberg Nature Reserve, you may even be lucky enough to spot one from the cliffs above.

is for the slow mornings, the long breakfasts, no emails, and pure unadulterated bliss.

Whale season is here. A mama humpback and her calf, off the coast of Plettenberg Bay, heading south. She’s been gaining around 45 kilograms a day on her mother’s milk since birth. Not bad going.

The & Spa is a short walk from the shore.

It’s World Turtle Day. They’ve been on the planet for over 200 million years. They know stuff. We listen and learn.

The turtle theory is simple: don’t rush. Don’t panic. Don’t look sideways. Just keep going.

Feels like the right speed for a Sunday in Plett. And pretty much always.

Plettenberg Bay sits on the migration path of some of the Indian Ocean’s most ancient travellers. Every year, endangered turtle hatchlings drift south along the Agulhas Current, and Plett’s beaches become part of their journey. Some wash ashore. Locals find them, wrap them in towels, and get them to the rescue network.
