Southern Cape Juniors Shine at the 2026 Junior Bottom Fish National.
The 2026 Junior Bottom Fish Nationals concluded this past week in Port Alfred, running from 7 to 12 July.
The Southern Cape was proudly represented by our dedicated Under-16 and Under-19 junior teams, who put on a fantastic display of sportsmanship, skill, and determination.
The competing anglers were as follows:
1. Michaela Schorn (U/19 - SADSAA - Captain)
2. Owen Lineker (Southern Cape U/19 - Captain)
3. Ben Groenewald (Southern Cape U/19)
4. Jack Magerla (Southern Cape U/19)
5. Joshua Du Plessis (Barbarians U/16)
First and foremost, the Southern Cape would like to extend a massive thank you to Eastern Province Deep Sea Angling Association as well as the Port Alfred River & Ski Boat Club for hosting this fantastic tournament. Thank you for welcoming our teams so warmly and for organising a memorable week of competitive angling.
An initiative like this requires immense support, and we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the George Skiboat Club, the Plettenberg Bay Angling Association ( ), the South African Deep Sea Angling Association, as well as the Southern Cape Deep Sea Angling Association. Without your backing, this incredible opportunity would not have been possible.
A special thank you also goes out to the parents, whose continuous support and dedication paved the way for our juniors to compete at this level.
While Mother Nature threw a few less-than-perfect weather conditions our way, it did little to dampen the spirits of the competitors. The fishing proved to be absolutely excellent, and the competition on the water was fierce from day one. Fishing the rich waters of Port Alfred was a tremendous privilege for our young anglers, providing them with invaluable, hard-earned experience that will undoubtedly serve them well in their future angling careers.
A special and vital thank you must also go to all the skippers. Your expertise, guidance, and dedication ensured that our juniors were looked after and brought back safely to the harbour each and every day. We are deeply grateful for your commitment to the safety and mentorship of our youth.
Congratulations to all the participants for their hard work and grit during a phenomenal week on the water!
