Mexican Independence Day (Día de la Independencia) is celebrated on September 16, commemorating the start of the 11-year war against Spain in 1810. It is not Cinco de Mayo. Festivities begin the night of September 15 with a reenactment of the historic "Cry for Freedom".

The Start of the War: On September 16, 1810, a Catholic priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bell in Dolores, Guanajuato, and gave a passionate speech urging people to rise up against Spanish rule. This event is known as El Grito de Dolores.
