Another day, another bird rescue! 💙🪽

A big shoutout to our dockhand, Lloyd, our manager, Chris, and our maintenance tech, Eddie, who noticed a pelican struggling with a fishing hook. They quickly stepped in, safely removed the hook, and released the bird back into the wild hook-free and ready to soar!

We’re proud of our team for looking out for the wildlife that makes our waterfront so special. Great job, Lloyd, Chris, and Eddie! 🌊🩵

The story of how the River King rescued an osprey:

I'm Captain Joe, and I've spent nearly 40 years on the water—first as a commercial fisherman, now leading eco tours aboard the River King at Capt Hirams. We explore three routes through the Indian River Lagoon, including Pelican Island, America's first national wildlife refuge.

Every trip is different. Depending on the season, guests may see dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, rays, sharks, dozens of fish species, and an incredible variety of birds. I spend every day tracking wildlife and sharing how the lagoon's ecosystem changes throughout the year.

One of my favorite things to follow is the osprey nesting season. I monitor nests across the lagoon daily, watching pairs build nests, raise chicks, and eventually send them off on their first flights.

On one inlet tour, I noticed something unusual from nearly a mile away. One of the osprey chicks had fallen into the water and was struggling. I had to decide whether to keep going or try to help, knowing an osprey isn't an easy bird to rescue.

My mate, Lara, and I eased the boat alongside, and instead of forcing anything, we extended it a lifeline and let the chick decide. It climbed onto the life jacket on its own, and we carefully brought it aboard. The young osprey rode safely on the bow all the way back to the marina, where it rested on a nearby boat before eventually recovering.

For Lara and I, it was simply another day on the lagoon—observing wildlife, helping when we could, and sharing those moments with our guests. Judging by the photos, reviews, and reactions afterward, it became a day none of us will forget.

Best,

Captain Joe
