Blood drawn right after a single workout slowed cancer cell growth by up to 29% in the lab. Your muscle isn't just tissue, it's an organ that makes medicine.
Here's what researchers did. 32 breast cancer survivors did one session of either resistance training or high-intensity intervals. Blood was drawn before, immediately after, and 30 minutes later, then that serum was applied to cancer cells in the lab. The serum taken right after exercise slowed cancer cell growth by 20 to 21% with resistance training and 19 to 29% with HIIT. From one session.
The mechanism is myokines. When your muscles contract they release signalling proteins into your bloodstream, and in this study decorin, IL-6 and SPARC all rose by 9 to 47% immediately after exercise. Your muscle isn't a passive lump of tissue, it's a secretory organ.
Now the honest part. This was done in a dish, not in a body. It shows exercise changes your blood chemistry in a way that suppresses cancer cells in the lab, it does not show a workout shrinks tumours. And the effect faded back to baseline within 30 minutes, which is why frequency matters more than intensity here. If the window closes fast, what counts is how often you reopen it.
For a body over 40 it means more muscle is a larger secretory organ, better at producing these signals. Building muscle isn't only about strength or how you look, you're expanding your own internal pharmacy.
