Tonight, someone broke into our little Ugly Duckling in Portland, Maine. We are heartbroken. We are angry. And right now, we’re trying to pick up the pieces.

Behind this little business are real people, livelihoods, hard work, and so much love. We’ve put our hearts into creating a place where our neighbors can gather and everyone feels welcome. Having that sense of safety shaken hurts more than we can explain.

This is not okay. And it cannot become something we simply learn to accept.

We can have compassion and still expect accountability. We can welcome everyone and still insist on safe neighborhoods. Our staff, our guests, and every person who calls Portland home deserve both.

Please don’t let this conversation end when you scroll past this video. Share it. Call your city councilors and state representatives. Ask what concrete steps they will take to keep our communities safe, support the people affected, and prevent this from happening again.

We need leaders who listen, take these experiences seriously, and turn that concern into action. And we need to come together as neighbors, even when we disagree, to change what isn’t working. The decisions we make today will shape the Portland we leave for the next generation.
