Work will soon begin to remove river sand from Corps Island in Pool 3 of the Mississippi River.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul District plans to move approximately 450,000 cubic yards of sand from Corps Island, which serves as a temporary dredged-material placement site, to a permanent upland location. That is enough sand to cover a football field about 211 feet deep. That’s a lot!

Sand will be offloaded near Lock and Dam 3 beginning around mid-August, and the project is expected to continue through October 2027. Corps Island will be closed to the public during the work. The surrounding water will remain open, but boaters should expect towboats, barges and other equipment in the area and use extra caution.

A quick sediment note: The dredged material we see piled along the river at sites like Corps Island or Reads Landing is primarily sand, not the fine sediment, or “river mud,” driving Lake Pepin’s long-term infilling.
