Twenty-five years ago today, New York City—and the world—changed forever.
On September 11, 2001, thousands of innocent people lost their lives, including first responders who ran toward the danger while others were trying desperately to escape it. Countless more lost loved ones, their homes, their sense of safety, or parts of themselves that could never be recovered.
As the chaos unfolded downtown, people fled north through the streets of Lower Manhattan, covered in dust and fear, looking for somewhere—anywhere—to stop and gather. Bars, restaurants, churches, stores, and other neighborhood spaces became places of refuge, offering water, shelter, telephones, and a moment of safety amid the uncertainty.
Twenty-five years later, we remember the people we lost, the families and communities forever changed, and the extraordinary acts of humanity that emerged in the midst of unimaginable tragedy.
Today, we remember September 11, 2001, and all those whose lives were changed forever.
In loving memory of all the souls we lost. ❤️
Never forget.
