Milwaukee unveiled a memorial honoring Vel R. Phillips last week and we heard from Mayor Cavalier Johnson, internationally-recognized artist Karyn Olivier who created the sculpture, and Vel’s son, Michael, outside Draft & Co.

Vel R. Phillips was a trailblazing attorney, civil rights activist, and politician from Milwaukee. Some cool facts about her:

➡️ First Black woman to graduate from the University of Wisconsin Law School
➡️ First Black person and first woman elected as an alderperson to the Milwaukee Common Council
➡️ First female judge in Milwaukee County and the first Black judge in Wisconsin

You can now pose at Vel’s desk and then stop in to Draft & Co. (just steps away) to enjoy her favorite treat—ice cream!
