Down a quiet country road deep in the woods of Mason, New Hampshire, you can have lunch inside the 1786 cottage that inspired Grandmother’s house in the classic Little Red Riding Hood storybook. 🌿🏡📖
It is called Pickity Place, and the whole setting feels like someone tucked a fairy tale into the New Hampshire countryside.
Illustrator Elizabeth Orton Jones used the little red cottage as inspiration for Grandmother’s house in the 1948 Little Golden Book edition of Little Red Riding Hood, and that storybook connection is still part of the experience today.
Inside, guests sit down for a five-course, farm to table seasonal lunch built around herbs, flowers, and flavors that change throughout the year. Outside, culinary gardens filled with herbs and edible flowers make the meal feel connected to the place around it.
And lunch is only part of the visit.
Take your time wandering the gardens, peek into the greenhouse, browse the gift shop, and look for the Little Red Riding Hood memorabilia tucked inside the old cottage.
Even the drive there feels like part of the story. The final stretch takes you farther into the quiet countryside until suddenly there it is: a bright red 18th-century cottage waiting for you at the end of the road.
Part historic New Hampshire home, part garden lunch, part real-life storybook, Pickity Place is one of those places that turns an ordinary meal into an entire day trip.
