Go for a hike at Shaw’s then come grab lunch!

An hour outside St. Louis, more than two thousand acres of Missouri's original landscape have been carefully rebuilt one prairie grass and wetland plant at a time. 🌾

Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit belongs to the Missouri Botanical Garden, but unlike the manicured gardens in the city, this site focuses on restoring native prairie, woodland, and wetland habitat the way it existed before large scale farming reshaped the region. Trails wind through restored tallgrass prairie where herons and other wading birds work the shallow wetland pools, and early mornings often bring a mix of mist and birdsong that feels far removed from the highway just a few miles away. 🦢

It's easy to forget how much of Missouri's landscape used to look like this before it was converted to cropland, which makes a place like Shaw Nature Reserve feel less like a park and more like a working memory of the land. Watching a heron stand motionless in a restored wetland pool is a small reminder of what patience in nature actually looks like.
