Did you know a crab’s size can give you clues about how much meat may be inside? 🦀

Here’s the scoop on crab shedding and fullness!

Blue crabs have hard shells that don’t grow with them. As they grow, they must shed their old shell in a process called **molting**. A new, soft shell forms underneath, and the crab carefully pulls itself out of the old one.

After shedding, the new shell gradually hardens. During this time, the crab may look large but still have less meat inside. As it continues feeding and growing, the crab begins to fill out again.

❓Why are some crabs fuller than others?

• A crab that recently shed may have a lighter shell and less meat.
• A hard crab that has had more time to grow often has a fuller body.
• Food supply, water conditions, and the season can affect meat quality.
• Weight and shell hardness can be better indicators of fullness than size alone.
• Two crabs of the same size may not have the same amount of meat.

That’s why experienced crabbers look at more than just the crab’s size. Shell hardness, weight, appearance, and overall condition all help tell the story!

Still selling crabs if you’re ready to get your fix! Whether you’re planning a family crab feast, weekend gathering, or just craving fresh crabs, 🦀 Catch 22 at Mid-Del 🦀is ready to serve you.
