When you step through the doors of The Beacon Des Moines, you’ll hear children giggling, see women connecting over coffee or a game of spades, and catch the aroma of home-cooked meals wafting from the kitchen. Some days, a homemade birthday cake sits on the counter.

You’re not simply entering a building. You’re stepping into a home where women feel safe and empowered to share their stories. For many women who walk through these doors, it’s the first time in years they’ve felt secure:

On the latest episode of the dsm Wealth Podcast, presented by Revol One Financial®, Annie Brandt, senior vice president and market executive for Bank of America, provided tips on how to better safeguard wealth.

She encouraged listeners to first determine how many months of living expenses they have and set aside three to six months safely in liquid, FDIC-protected accounts. Another way to protect wealth, she said, is to ensure digital protection and to not use the same password for every account.

Jay Wang has always loved American culture — the Chicago Bulls, Michael Jackson, Hollywood movies, the whole works. In school, he often daydreamed about being a pilot or an architect in America.

“One day, when I grow up, I’ll see the Big Apple, Los Angeles, Miami,” he remembers thinking to himself. “There were always those little seeds.”

Building a restaurant empire in the Midwest was never on his wish list. But that’s exactly what he did.

Walking into Brad and Sundie Ruppert’s Norwalk home and studio feels like stepping into a quirky art museum.

Together, the Rupperts create mixed-media sculptures, often animal portraits and abstract work, made with felt salvaged from the cutting-room floor of Greeley Hat Works in Colorado. Their work has long been rooted in the idea of seeing things for what they could be rather than what they are, and sculptural felt is exactly that, combining creativity and sustainability.

“People always ask, ‘Did you go to college?’ Yeah, but nobody teaches you how to use trash and make it into high-end art in college,” Sundie said.
