Join All Good Books on Saturday, September 26th at 10am for a very special children's storytime with local author Monica Roe! Monica will be reading from her new book, 'Wowrus Looks On the Bright Side'. The reading will be followed by a book signing.

Monica Roe is an author, physical therapist, public health student, and researcher/advocate for the social model of disability and inclusive rural health. A first-generation graduate, Monica studies public health and disability-inclusive disaster preparedness at the University of Alaska. She and her family are currently based in rural South Carolina.

This event is free and open to the public, no registration required.

Walrus is such a good friend. In fact, he's so good at cheering friends up and finding the bright side in any situation that sometimes his friends call him "Wowrus."

But when Walrus breaks a tusk during the Great Iceberg Classic, it hurts! He doesn’t want to hear about the silver linings of having only one tusk! As he nurses his wound, Walrus starts to understand that pointing out the positive doesn't always help. It takes Narwhal listening to him for Walrus to realize that perhaps not everything can—or should—be bright all the time…and that’s okay too.

We have two wonderful author events lined up this week!

🐟 Tonight, 9/23, join us at 6pm for a book talk and signing with Ronnie Vergnolle for his new book, 'The Book of Ribbner'.

'The Book of Ribbner' is both an epic fishing story and a religious allegory for a rapidly changing world. It explores the cost of grief, the fusion of love, the sacred code of the fisherman, and the existential tension between carbon-based life and artificial intelligence. It asks what humanity must preserve before convenience, consumption, and machine logic sever the ancient bonds that make life meaningful.

⚡ On Friday 9/25 at 6pm, local author and professor Conor Harrison will be here to give a talk and signing for his new book, 'Brokers of Power'.

Looking beyond technology and policy, Harrison interrogates what it means to have powerful financial institutions as the primary agents of change in the fraught and ongoing energy transition. A timely and invaluable contribution to the fields of geography, environmental studies, and the energy social sciences, 'Brokers of Power' is a cautionary account delving into the complexities surrounding the push for decarbonization.

Join All Good Books tomorrow morning at 10am for a very special children's storytime with local author and illustrator, Meredith Walker. Meredith will read from her new picture book, Kit and Her Cat, and lead a coloring activity!

A sweet celebration of innocence, companionship, and pure joy, Kit and Her Cat follows a young girl and her playful kitten through a gentle day of games, ribbons, naps, and affection. Perfect for cat lovers, bedtime reading, and children discovering the special bond of a first pet.

Meredith Walker is an artist and illustrator based in Columbia, South Carolina. She lives with her husband, two daughters, Penny the dog and Macaroni, their beloved cat. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of South Carolina and began painting in 2019 as a way to cope with postpartum depression. In addition to building an international collector base, Meredith has collaborated with independent designers and established brands to license her artwork for soft goods and women’s apparel. This is her first children’s book.

We have two excellent author events coming up today and tomorrow! Join All Good Books tonight, September 17th at 6pm for a Book Talk + Signing with Timothy J. Heaphy, and tomorrow, September 18th at 6pm for a Book Talk + Signing with Sarah Waheed.

Timothy J. Heaphy was Chief Investigative Counsel of the House of Representatives Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol. He also oversaw the independent investigation into the August 12, 2017 riot in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is currently partner at Willkie, Farr & Gallagher LLP and previously served as the Obama-appointed US Attorney for the Western District of Virginia. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia with his family.

Sarah Waheed is Assistant Professor of History at the University of South Carolina and a historian of South Asia. She is a cultural historian who explores empire, nationalism, colonialism, Islam, gender, and memory, with a particular focus on Muslim communities across the India-Pakistan divide.
She is the author of 'Hidden Histories of Pakistan: Censorship, Literature, and Secular Nationalism in Late Colonial India' (Cambridge University Press, 2022) and was featured in venues such as the New Books Network. Her scholarship has appeared in several leading peer reviewed journals such as Modern Asian Studies and Asian Affairs, as well as featured in such globally leading publications as Critical Art Collective, Himal Southasian, The Caravan, Jadaliyya, and Maydan.
Waheed's second book, 'Chand Bibi: The Lives and Legends of a Warrior Queen', (Penguin Random House India, 2026) reconstructs the life and afterlives of the sixteenth-century Deccan queen Chand Bibi. Waheed has appeared on podcasts such as What’s Her Name to discuss how stories of women's power, sovereignty, Islam, and political memory travel across time through history, legend, art, and popular imagination in South Asia and beyond.

Join us tonight at 6pm for the 2026 Fall Literary Festival with Kevin Sack! Sack will read from and discuss his book 'Mother Emanuel: Two Centuries of Race, Resistance, and Forgiveness in One Charleston Church, which was named one of the New York Times’ Ten Best Books of 2025'.

Kevin Sack is a veteran journalist and the author of Mother Emanuel: Two Centuries of Race, Resistance, and Forgiveness in One Charleston Church, which was named one of The New York Times’ 10 Best Books of 2025 and was a finalist for the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction. A three-time shared recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for reporting, Sack spent 30 years writing for The New York Times and has also worked for the Los Angeles Times and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. At The New York Times, he was known for producing long-form narrative and investigative projects on topics as varied as kidney transplantation, police militarization, refugee assimilation, and climate change. He also served as bureau chief in Atlanta and Albany, covered health care for the national desk, and reported extensively on race and domestic and presidential politics.

All Fall Literary Festival events are free of charge and open to both the USC community and the community at large.

Our staff is most excited for Exit Party from beloved Emily St. John Mandel who wrote favorites like Station Eleven, The Glass Hotel, and Sea of Tranquility.

Birdie Horne is the combined pen name of Mary Winn and her former enemy Eden Robins. Over the years, they have been love rivals, co-godmothers, and neighbors across an alley in Chicago.
