In Loving Memory of Fahmia Assad

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and family matriarch, Fahmia Assad, on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

Born in 1932 in Beit Hanina, Palestine, Fahmia was a woman of extraordinary strength, compassion, and joy whose life touched countless people. True to the meaning of her name, “intelligence,” she cherished education from an early age. At just ten years old, she persuaded her father to establish the first girls’ school in Beit Hanina, creating opportunities for generations to come.

A true free spirit, Fahmia defied the expectations of her time. She climbed olive and fig trees, walked miles to visit family, and embraced adventure throughout her life. Even in her sixties, she continued climbing trees to enjoy the fruit that connected her to her childhood and homeland.

Known for her warmth, wit, and unforgettable laughter, Fahmia was a gifted storyteller whose kindness and generosity left a lasting impression. A devout Muslim, she lived with unwavering faith, integrity, and a deep commitment to helping others.

In 1969, with remarkable courage, Fahmia brought her children to the United States in search of a brighter future. Her determination and business acumen helped establish Assad’s Bakery in Cleveland, Ohio. She also devoted herself to preserving Palestinian culture, passing down traditions through food, tatreez, storytelling, folk songs, celebrations, and dance.

Even as her health declined, Fahmia remained a source of love and resilience. Her final words to her children—“I love you”—captured the essence of her life.

Fahmia was the beloved wife of 66 years to Ismail Assad, who preceded her in death in 2020. She is survived by her seven children—Riyad, Shadia, Fairuz, Farid, Awatef, Ahmad, and Merfit; her brother, Ibrahim Samad; and 81 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
