Before “Students First” became a motto, it was a way of life.

For more than 20 years, Irene Blum greeted students in the Campbell Hall dining center with a smile, a joke, and—almost always—their name. She called her checker’s station her “throne,” but to generations of students, she was so much more: a bright spot in their day and a reminder that someone on campus truly cared.

Her kindness and joy left a lasting mark on the university and on the thousands of students who passed through her line.
