X — 10 Year Anniversary Pale Ale

Brewed to celebrate 10 years of Suds Monkey Brewing Company, X is a modernized revival of the beer that started it all.

The original inspiration traces back to 1993 when Greg first began brewing a pale ale influenced by two legendary craft beers: the balanced malt body of Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale and the bright Cascade hop character of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. That recipe eventually became Monkey Tail Pale Ale — the very first beer brewed for Suds Monkey.

Years ago, while trying to get Monkey Tail placed in a local bar, Greg was told the beer was “too old school.” That comment stuck around.

So for Suds Monkey’s 10-year anniversary, it felt like the perfect time to revisit the recipe… not to replace its roots, but to evolve them.

X keeps the firm bitterness and classic hop backbone that made old-school pale ales great, using Magnum for a clean, structured bitterness. Then modern hops like Citra and Mosaic layer in bright tropical and citrus character to bring the beer into a new era. Crystal malts were reduced by 60%, lightening both the body and color to create a more refreshing, snappy finish.

The result is a bridge between generations of craft beer:
Classic West Coast soul with a modern hop expression.

A tribute to where Suds Monkey started…

So let me just explain it real quick.

We’ve been running this as an experiment at Suds Monkey for the last month and a half…

And this Friday will be version #4.

And honestly?
