Just a very quick round of a applause for the dumpsters directly in front of one of our greatest landmarks and next to our most wonderful pharmacy and perfectly adjacent to one of our most athensy bars. I swear we can all do just a little bit better. And now I’ll shut up for a million years.

Honored to be a venue for Athens Film Festival once again. And while we might always give their founder, Chuck, a very hard time, we genuinely love the excitement for film they always bring to the community. Film is in desperate need of innovation and imagination and an exploration of its history straight through to an unimaginable future. There were years when you’d want to see two movies a week in the theater. The thrill of a first date at a movie and sharing a bag of popcorn with m&ms and a dr. pepper. Those days must continue. Now theaters close far too frequently. The movies have bloated budgets and boring performances. However with things like Athens film festival it’s easy to see how quickly a change can happen. A new wave. It makes me hopeful. But it takes everyone. So come and support the makers and doers and dreamers. Tonight and tomorrow we will have screenings throughout the evening. Grab a Guinness. Grab a Bordeaux blanc. Grab a ticket. Grab a seat. Let the lights dim. Lose yourself. Fall into someone else’s imagination. There’s worse places to be!

This is a total failure. Very close to refusing to pay the tickets I receive because I’ve missed a re up by 4 minutes (s...

This is a total failure. Very close to refusing to pay the tickets I receive because I’ve missed a re up by 4 minutes (so convenient wow) and wonder who might be with me?

Athens needs a new idea. There’s a growing population of individuals that need more help than the people who live and work downtown are able to offer. There are mental health issues at play. There are housing issues to consider. There are financial impacts that are felt. Downtown businesses are filled full of compassionate folks. We offer drinks and foods to people who sleep rough on the streets (at this moment someone sleeps right next to our building in the middle of the sidewalk and has since he came to town a week ago) as we can but are often taken advantage of. Each weekend, I am yelled at by a person I do not know that is suffering in ways I could never imagine for something neither of us know anything about. Our staff is endlessly asked for favors of every kind. Everyday, multiple times per day, we clean up a pile of trash and scavenged cigarette butts and we try to keep our corner of the world feeling as new and beautiful as ever. Make no mistake, we are friends with an entire community of folks that we know and are gentle and kind as can be and just need support, and they will always always always get our support in any way possible. Many are friends after years of conversations. Many of them have helped me or our staff with odd jobs or big jobs down all the days. But within the last year or so there has been an explosive uptick in the number of times I’ve felt unsafe during an interaction with a stranger in need of support that I’m not qualified in any capacity to offer. People have started to avoid patio sitting as a result. People mention to me frequently that coming downtown now feels much different than it ever has before. Again, we do not have a solution. We will not leave downtown ever. That is not a solution. We love this town. Our corner. And I don’t believe for a second that nothing can be done to help more people in need. So what do we do? I swear to god we try everyday. Best as we can. I don’t mean to complain. This is not a complaint. It’s just a wondering.

As much as I might like to ridicule you for drinking Belgian beer today (the cheek…the cheek of you), I will not. Come and cheer on the home team (peanuts and crackerjacks). And while I might be aware of some (gross) political tampering with regard to a certain (ridiculous) red card, I will still watch and support these fellows as they chase a dream.

I’m sure you’ve already guessed, but we will be OPEN JULY 4th. Normal hours all week. Normal menu with potentially some hot doggy additions? Come and see World Cup. Come beat the heat. Eat a treat. Drink a drink. Fall in love. Laugh all the way home. Get in bed and smile yourself to sleep. We are here for you!

We suffer no fools. Especially on holidays. So bring a smile or we will throw you out the window.

Thank youuuuuuuuu, Athens!

Athfest! We meet again! It’s very easy to love this town, and you know I do. But I just learned that the 4th of July fireworks are amazingly tonight instead of on the 4th of July. I’m sure it’s much cheaper to do things this way. But come on. COME ON! Just have the day on the day. Make the day special! It’s Athfest and you want to take any amount of foot traffic away from the already struggling downtown? That’s pretty damn silly. And by silly I mean I’d like to use many other words. I remember when fireworks were on the day and downtown. Let us please do that again!

Here’s to our little town. And to Athfest. And to every performer tonight. And to every athfest organizer and volunteer. And to those listening to local acts and buying their albums and tapes. And to the record shops for always promoting them. And to musicians warehouse for having those last minute gig needs. And to the vendors sweating and hustling. And to the venues that do their best to accommodate the swell. And to the police for keeping the place safe. And to the restaurants and bars that save lives with air conditioning and sustenance. And to Athens for letting it happen for 26 years. And to our staff for all they do. And death to fireworks the Saturday before a Saturday Fourth of July.

Sorry as always for ranting like a fool into the void.

I’ll give you until Tuesday to get your bracket filled out and put on our wall. And yes I’m disappointed with the tournament expansion. And yes I’m disappointed with the state of affairs surrounding the tournament. But it’s the World Cup. And it is historic. And it is here. And you might be going to a game. And you should be fu***ng ecstatic about that possibility. I might’ve picked USA to win for the first time ever (for an array of ridiculous stylistic and conspiratorial reasons). But I’ve got Colombia meeting them in the final and wouldn’t that be something? Anyway, the World Cup is for dreaming and falling in love and making believe and watching miracles happen before your eyes and hoping against hope that one more glorious moment might satisfy your soul. May it all come true before our eyes and leave us breathless. Come fill out your brackets procrastinators.

Jazz tonight for all the fun lovers. USA game tomorrow and you’d likely better arrive early to see the dawgs bite the kangaroos.
