The George in Rye

The George in Rye The George is the most luxurious of Rye hotels. Relax in one of our individually designed rooms. Rye itself is unlike any other town in England.
(1617)

Located in the centre of Rye, East Sussex, the hotel was recently renovated to create one of the most stunning hideaways on the south coast. The building dates from 1575 and has enviable heritage; it even has an original Georgian ballroom used for lavish weddings and banquets. An eclectic and contemporary design has been given to this historic fabric using a wide range of antique and modern furnit

ure, materials and local art. The result is a comfortable blend of old and new, creating an atmosphere which is relaxed, informal and individual. A medieval townscape locked in time and with a fascinating history, it offers a great escape for relaxation or romance. Four miles from the white beach of Camber Sands the sea air is wonderful any time of year. With plenty to occupy you for a few nights, we look forward to welcoming you at The George in Rye.

The beaches in Rye and Winchelsea are primarily shingle at high tide, which then give way to vast, flat sand at low tide.

This dynamic is shaped by centuries of coastal erosion, strong winds, and everyone’s favourite geography GCSE process... longshore drift!

Did you know... centuries ago, the Great Storm of 1287 radically altered this landscape, destroying the original coastal town of Old Winchelsea and shifting the River Rother’s estuary? So much so that historic coastal forts like Camber Castle, now sit two miles inland.

In this beautiful weather we’re having, we’re making the most of our close proximity to the sea and taking lots of dips!

We hope you do too, when you pay us a visit.

Happy wandering weekends all xx

What makes a hotel memorable?

In the latest edition of our Notes on Design series, we’re delighted to sit down with our friend Atlanta Bartlett—interior designer, stylist and bestselling author whose beautifully considered interiors have inspired homes for decades and who we’ve known since we first arrived in Rye.

Here Atlanta answers three questions we wanted to hear her perspective on. We talk about designing through all the senses, embracing happy accidents, celebrating personal history, welcoming the unexpected, and the importance of building layers.

Atlanta’s latest book, The Romantic Minimalist, explores how simplicity and warmth can sit beautifully side by side, creating homes with soul, character and a lasting sense of calm.

We hope you enjoy these musings as much as we did.

Cow Pat Bingo anyone?

Meet Minnie the Cow, who made the annual highlight of the Great Benenden Fair possible!

Yes you heard right... Cow Pat Bingo was one of the brilliantly silly games on offer and this year they sold out of squares in record time: 1 hour and 40 minutes with many disappointed people muttering they “will have to come earlier next year”.

Congrats to the couple, recently moved from the Isle of Wight, for winning the prize we sponsored.

The George supports many local schools, villages and charities over the course of a year and it’s always nice to get some positive feedback from the organisers.

According to Benenden Fete, they raised a record £25,175, which will go towards St George’s Church and all the local charities that it supports.

It’s wonderful to see how our contribution has helped make the day a success and how it will support the community and those impacted by the charities involved.

You could say Paul Dobson has diversity in his blood; he started organic farming in 2009 after a career as a professional golfer!

Now he runs the organic farm that’s part of and also works with his partner Kristin at the Oxney vineyard.

Together they have built one of England’s largest organic estates around the belief that farming should work with nature, not against it.

The end result is an impressive array of award-winning still and sparkling English wines, which The George is delighted to stock.

Find how David Moyes, The Ritz and Eurovision all fit together in our latest Q&A blog, posted in celebration of - link in bio.
