Another jarring session. It’s very satisfying though.

Some real bee keeping geekery incoming… A few weeks ago I carried out my first spilt of a hive; removing the queen and half the bees and putting them into another hive - that’s the simple part. That leaves the old hive without a Queen. A colony of bees will die without a queen within 3 weeks however, they can try to form a new queen if there’s fresh eggs in the hive. The worker bees will feed specific eggs royal jelly, and then build a super cell around her for protection. (5 Queen cells bottom of photo) The Queen that emerges first will kill the others eggs and take her place on the throne; hopefully for 3 years. So I did it, successfully spilt a hive into two, these Queens will hatch in the next few days. 👑🐝

Its World Earth Day today and it’s also Coffee Beeans 1st birthday 🎉 We’ve been roasting coffee for a whole year, have we change the world? Not really, but we’ve had a lot of fun. However, we said at the start we would give back 20% of profits to the bees, a promise we proudly kept. Last month we purchased 3 new hives for our apiary, taking our total to 6. So a big thanks to everyone who has enjoyed our coffee and honey. As a thank you if you’ve purchased any Coffee Beeans in the past year we’ll happily give you a jar of our 2022 honey crop from our new hives, you kinda have a stake in them now so it’s only fair. Thanks again! 🍯 ☕️

A fellow bee keeper I know took this amazing photo of a Queen Bee laying an egg. What a snap! In 21 days she’ll become a worker bee, she’ll live for a six weeks, making about a tea spoon of honey. 🙌🏽

You might’ve spotted quite a few extra large bees flying around at the moment. They are all queen bumblebee that have been hibernating alone underground. The queen will have spent the entire winter down there, using up reserves of energy stored as fat in her body. When she first emerges, she bumbles around like a drunk, feeding up on spring flowers, drinking nectar to gain energy. She will then begin to search for a suitable nest site to lay her eggs and start her colony. Unlike honey bees, bumblebees don’t store honey they just eat it as the go, which is why us bee keepers dont keep bumblesbees, they might look and act stupid but they’re the clever ones!

Hiya! We’ve been quiet but us bee keepers usually are in the winter as are the bees. With spring around the corner i’m busy getting everything ready for the season, cleaning & building new frames for the bees to store their nectar. It’s a slow job but quite therapeutic luckily. Roll on the spring!
