Roseground Roseground Tatting & Lacemaking Supplies Tatting is a form of lacemaking which probably originated, in its present form, in the early 19th century.

Bobbin lacemaking originated in the 16th century in continental Europe and has developed throughout the world, in various forms and in various centres, since then. In England it developed as a cottage industry, again in various distinctive regional forms in several areas, notably the south-east midlands - Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire - and in Devon. This cottage industry had its heyday in the 19th century before being largely overtaken by machine-made lace from the Nottingham area. The 1960s the craft saw a revival in interest in lacemaking among hobby lacemakers which spread throughout the world, The craft continues to flourish today, with 'lace days' and 'lace fairs' held regularly in most parts of the United Kingdom and other places thoughout the world. It is traditionally carried out using a shuttle to form the distinctive forms often seen on doily and handkerchief edgings - but nowadays developed to produce, in addition, far more adventurous and advanced pieces. More recently, needle tatting has developed and remains a popular alternative to the shuttle.

Countdown to the Tonbridge Lace & Threads Fair, which takes place this coming Sunday - 11th October. So much to see and do including a Q&A session with Claire Bonito, author of the fabulous recently published book, Modern Milanane Lace.

We will be heading down early on Friday as we like to enjoy Saturday in the area so if there is anything on your wish list that you might wish to purchase from us, email me before Thursday lunchtime ([email protected]) so I can reserve - I would hate to disappoint and not have a particular colour, book etc with me.

Please support the fair if you can - enjoy a day out with your lacemaking and tatting friends - light refreshments available too 😀

"There's always something new at Roseground!"

Today we are delighted to launch 4 delightful Binche lace patterns designed by Carole Smith - Snowflake Lace Design. Thank you so much Carole for giving Roseground the opportuny to offer these via our website and at events that we attend.

Carole started making lace as a child and continued to develop her skills over the years with Kitty Mason. For the last twenty years, Carole has been lucky enough to travel to Brugge to learn Flemish lace with Anne-Marie Verbeke-Billet leading to designing her own Binche patterns. Carole teaches in Scotland and beyond.

***NEW PATTERN ALERT***
A Regal Crown Coaster – A Bucks Point Design

Those of you that know me, also know I have had a fascination for Crowns in Lace, more particularly the Coronation Lace which is displayed at Cowper & Newton Museum, Olney, Buckinghamshire, UK.

I then decided to design a 21st Century commemorative version. Just a length of lace as per previous pieces worked historically, which will be enhanced with ‘Sparkle’ bringing it right up to the more modern day.

Once I completed the panel of crowns for my own collection of lace, I felt that I should share part of this journey with other lacemakers. So, I created a coaster that fits beautifully in a glass coaster (75mm x 75mm) available from www.roseground.com.

In the pack you will find photos of the final piece worked and mounted together with details relating to No. of Pairs, Suggested Threads & Optional Sparkle. You will also find useful diagrams, information and the pricking itself in the following pages.

Please note this is sadly not for a complete beginner, but for the more seasoned lacemaker.

The pattern pack is now on its way to Pam ready for sale on her website and at events in person. You can view the details on my website below (see below), but the link to Roseground is not live until Roseground’s website has been updated.
