in 1974, Motown released the Jackson 5’s ninth studio album, Dancing Machine. The title song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group, or Chorus.

The creative mastermind behind the song’s vocal harmonies was James Anthony Carmichael, a pianist and arranger who helped steer the career of Motown superstars the Commodores. Carmichael’s creative imprint can also be heard on songs by icons such as Eddie Kendricks (“Keep On Truckin”), the Temptations (“Happy People”), Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye (“You’re A Special Part Of Me”), and G.C. Cameron (“All In Love Is Fair”).
