Let me tell you a story. It’s one that brings tears to my eyes.

Imagine being my wife Emma. Leaving paid work behind for 10+ years to focus on raising 3 kids, running a household and sacrificing everything so our family works as well as it does.

In August 2025, she decided to re-enter the workforce, in a totally new career as Pastry Commis Chef in one of Europe’s finest hotels. It was the job of her dreams. She’d done it, she’d made it back. The career re-build had started.

Emma’s new leaders treated her so poorly and unkindly it left her riddled with dread about returning to work each day. This treatment went on for months. I had to stop myself storming into the hotel to set them straight.

Emma wanted to endure through it, but we decided as a family the impact on her was too great. So she reluctantly left her dream job behind, she was devastated.

In December, she landed another awesome pasty role in a gorgeous venue and team. Her momentum could continue after a big set back. She was so happy.

Then without warning, Emma suffered an excruciating shoulder injury, which made it physically impossible to work. For months she waited patiently on the NHS for treatment. She was in constant agony.

Again, through no fault of her own, another career dream evaporated in front of her eyes.

Now, fast forward to yesterday. Emma started as Pastry Commis Chef at one of the most prestigious hotels in the world.

She walked in there, competed hard and won her dream. She’s now back on track, rebuilding a career that’s been on pause due to her own selflessness and some unfairness handed to her.

Emma is the shining example of someone brave enough to chase scary dreams, while never being deterred.

We adore you, Chef Emma 👩🏼‍🍳 Thank for inspiring me and our 3 girls. Go get ‘em.

How you feel on a Sunday night about heading to work on a Monday morning, tells you a lot.

Not many people totally LOVE Monday mornings if it’s your first day back at work after a break. But how it makes you feel deep inside is something you should pay attention to.

If you feel even remotely excited, jazzed or at the very least, cool with heading to work - it likely says you’re with a company, role or people that fulfil you.

If you feel dread, sadness or anger - it might mean a change is in order. If this is you, be mindful of wasting these years, you won’t get them back. But I get it, not everyone’s in a position to make change happen, at least not yet anyway.

Either way, may you have a blinder of a Monday, friends. And if you can’t, may you have your epiphany that starts a new dream thread.

Specialty coffee should do everything it can to not end up like w**e.

It needs to stay relatable, easy to understand and fun.

Speaking from experience. The interaction with (some) sommeliers can feel intimidating and nerve wracking, so much so I sometimes don’t want to ask questions or express myself for fear of feeling stupid. So I’ll sit quietly; nodding, swirling and not tasting the flavours they tell me I should.

Coffee is equally complex, and can suffer from a similar level of propeller-headship from (some) baristas who craft it.

Yes, we need this passion to drive care and innovation. But a customer interaction (w**e or coffee) should not be about unloading as much knowledge you can to demonstrate expertise. It should be to tell the story at the level to drinker feels comfortable.

So let’s all have a brew and a smile, knowing we’re in good hands. No intimidation, just bloody delicious brews with the potential to pull out the propeller hat if need be.

So many baristas (and sommeliers) do this well.

Happy Sunday, legends ☕️🍷

I got asked yesterday what success looks like to me. I hated my answer, I wish I’d said this instead…

I wanna be the dad they think I am.

I’m a work in progress but headed in the right direction.

Don’t catch them out. Catch them doing good.

I heard this somewhere and I love it.

As a boss, why would you pounce only when the team screws up. Pounce when they nail it and it’ll reduce the likelihood they screw up.

Makes sense to me anyway.
