Before the Lions Gate Bridge officially opened in 1939, Chief Mathias Joe carved and gifted the towering totem poles that still stand at Tomahawk today. The gift came through the close friendship with Chick — the Tomahawk’s founder — reflecting the strong relationships and community ties that shaped the North Shore in its early days 🫶

Created to commemorate the opening of the bridge, the poles welcomed travellers arriving in North Vancouver during a major moment in the city’s history. More than 85 years later, they remain one of the North Shore’s most recognizable landmarks — still greeting generations of guests at Tomahawk. ❤️

Over the years, The Tomahawk has been gifted many of the carvings, masks, and pieces that fill its walls — a reflection of the relationships, friendships, and sense of community that have been built here over generations. Every corner holds a story, and so much of what you see was shared with us by artists, guests, friends, and neighbours who’ve made this place part of their lives.

It’s one of the things that makes The Tomahawk feel so special. Not just a restaurant, but a gathering place layered with history, connection, and memories. You can come in for breakfast and coffee, then spend the next hour spotting details, asking questions, and taking in the collection that’s grown naturally over decades of community around these tables. 🍁
