For us, Casa Fuego was never just a business. It was a lifeline back home.
Migrating means leaving everything behind — your family, your streets, your mother's kitchen — and starting from zero, sometimes with nothing but a bag and a heart full of hope. Nobody tells you how heavy that bag feels.
We also know how difficult it is at first when you don't have a community where you live. I can't tell you how many nights I cried myself to sleep missing my family reunions, my friends' gatherings, everyone getting together for pan de mu**to, rosca de reyes, tamales on Día de la Candelaria, the posadas in December...
Everything got better once I started meeting people and getting involved in this amazing community in the Comox Valley, where we were received with open arms. Canada is such a beautiful country, and we made a home out of it.
So I cook. I grind chiles the way my mom did, and her mother before her, and so on. We fill our table with the colors of home. Every jar of salsa, every bottle of café de olla is our way of saying: we are still here, we are still Mexican, and home travels with us. As long as we keep our traditions alive, we are never truly far from home. ❤️
October is Latin American Heritage Month here in Canada — a whole month to celebrate our culture, our food, and our roots. We're proud to share ours with you. 🇲🇽🇨🇦
