My Desert Experiment :- Kiwano Melon / Magaka eminzwa

During the past winter season, I decided to experiment with growing Kiwano Melon (Magaka eminzwa in our language) in the desert. To my surprise, this has been one of the easiest and most rewarding vegetables I have ever planted. Growing it in these harsh desert conditions was almost effortless. Apart from watering it once every two days, I basically did nothing else, no complicated maintenance, no special treatment, just patience and allowing nature to do its work. Watching this plant thrive in the desert has been a beautiful reminder of the resilience and potential hidden in even the most challenging environments.

Beyond being an easy plant to grow, Kiwano Melon is also packed with nutritional benefits. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and water content, making it a great addition to a healthy diet. It supports hydration, helps strengthen the immune system, provides dietary fibre for digestion and contains nutrients that contribute to overall body wellness.

Pumpkin Power in My Desert Garden 🎃🏜️

Pumpkin is one of the easiest and most resilient crops I’ve grown here in the desert climate. I planted mine back in October, and up to now, it’s still producing. I’ve been continuously harvesting the leaves for vegetables, and the plant is still going strong, now even giving me fully grown pumpkins. This shows just how well pumpkin can adapt and survive, even in harsh desert conditions, if given basic care and consistency.

Pumpkin is not just easy to grow—it’s also packed with health benefits. The leaves are rich in vitamins and are great for boosting immunity and overall nutrition. The pumpkin itself is loaded with fiber and essential nutrients that support good digestion and heart health. Even the seeds are valuable, when roasted, they make a healthy snack full of protein, healthy fats, and minerals.

🌱 Takeaway: Never underestimate what can grow in tough conditions, sometimes the strongest harvest comes from the hardest environments.

Achieving the Unimaginable as a Desert Farmer 🌱🏜️

Tomato Lessons 🍅

A few years ago, I decided to challenge the odds and start farming right here in the desert of Arabia. Today, I can confidently say, tomato farming can be very profitable if taken seriously. Here’s how I manage my small backyard garden:

1. Nursery Preparation
Start by preparing your nursery bed. Mix the soil well and sow your tomato seeds carefully.

2. Transplanting
After 3–4 weeks, when your seedlings are strong enough, transplant them. Don’t leave them too long in the nursery bed.

3. Fertiliser Application
Apply NPK fertiliser 3–5 days after transplanting. Continue applying fertilizer every 2–3 weeks.
At the flowering stage, apply CAN—this boosts flower production and strengthens the stems.

4. Pruning
Remove suckers regularly. This helps the plant focus its energy on producing bigger, healthier fruits.

5. Weeding
Keep your garden weed-free so your tomatoes can get all the nutrients they need to grow well.

6. Staking
Support each plant with a stake. This protects them from strong winds and prevents them from collapsing under the weight of the fruits.

🌟 Tip: Always choose high-quality tomato varieties for the best yield.

From desert soil to fresh harvests nothing is impossible with consistency, patience, and a little faith. 🌿🍅

A few months ago, I decided to try something a little different. I planted okra seeds in my backyard garden. And yes, you heard that right… right here in the desert! 🌱🌞

Today, I’m proud to share the journey, from the thriving plant, to the fresh harvest, and finally to a delicious homemade meal. 🍽️

Okra (also known as lady’s finger) isn’t just tasty, it comes with some great benefits too:
✔️ Rich in vitamins C and K
✔️ Supports healthy digestion
✔️ Helps manage blood sugar levels
✔️ Packed with antioxidants

Proof that with a little patience and care, something amazing can grow anywhere, even in the desert.
