It’s a Totally Plant-Based Holiday Spread ✨🌿

Growing up, the festive season meant family, laughter, storytelling, and amazing food, some gently cooked in the kitchen, others over open flames. Looking back, I realised most of our meals were naturally plant-based - colourful, nourishing, and rooted in the land. Even when meat wasn’t served, the food still felt whole and made with love.

My family has fully embraced plant-based living 🌱. This year’s festive feast was 100% plant-powered, with tofu, vegan schnitzels, sausages, mushrooms, plant milks, creams, and more.

For the past 5 years, our plant-powered holidays have been about creativity, mindful eating, sustainability, health, and compassion. To us, plant-based isn’t restriction, it’s abundance, connection to nature, and community.

From our family to yours -
Happy Plant-Powered Holidays from Totally Plant Based 🥳💚

Wishing you warmth, good food, gratitude, and love.

Hello Zimbabwe (and beyond)! 🌞🌱
This December, the Thrive Africa Plant-Powered Holiday Campaign returns — and this time, we’re taking a beautiful journey back home… back to where it all began.

Long before “plant-based living” had a name, our rural communities were already living it. They fed generations with simple, powerful foods grown from the earth — dishes that kept our forefathers strong as they farmed, walked long distances, and built the communities we now call home.

I never grew up in the rural areas, and I hardly visited any, but every holiday the rural lifestyle came to me. Our home would transform into a festive village of its own — filled with grannies and grandpas, aunties, uncles, cousins, everyone talking at once, laughing, sharing stories.
And the best part? The food.

Each family arrived carrying treasures from the village: dried vegetables, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, madumbe, groundnuts, nyimo… wholesome cultural foods that carried both nutrition and memory.

In our home, we had a tradition of giving these foods an urban fusion twist.
One of my favourite creations was pumpkin or sweet potato cooked in syrup, then gently drizzled with fresh cream — an Afro-fusion dessert that always disappeared before the pot even cooled. Everyone kept coming back with “just one more spoon,” until the last bite was gone.

Today, we’ve reimagined that tradition in a healthier, fully plant-based way — using silky coconut cream instead. The same comfort. The same joy. Just kinder to our bodies and aligned with our plant-powered mission.

This December, join us as we rediscover these timeless foods and share recipes.
Let’s honour where we came from, celebrate who we are, and nourish the future — one plant-powered plate at a time. 🌿🇿🇼✨

As Zimbabweans, our daily meals often follow the same routine — rice with chicken and salad, or sadza with veggies and beef. A routine so common in every household that it has become a lifestyle. Totally Plant-Based is about shifting this routine by showing how vegetables themselves can bring creative and delicious variety to the plate. Just like potatoes can be turned into chips, fries, or mash, plant-based meals explore fun and filling ways to prepare many other veggies using our familiar spices, trying new ones, and combining flavors to bring excitement beyond the usual rice–chicken–salad combo.

Join me on this journey as I share the diverse meals we can add to our routines. At the end, I’ll be hosting a free meet-up where you can explore new varieties of foods to make, taste, enjoy, and take back into your own homes.

How I led our First Plant-Based Meal at Rotary!

On the 29th of August, I led our Rotary Club’s first ever plant-based lunch. After months of including small plant based options since Africa day (May 2025), we finally went big by reducing the meats from three to just one and serving a 95% plant based meal. This was a huge step for me, considering the usual diets within the years.

The meal’s main highlights were the golden Crispy Kentucky fried mushrooms, a delicious Lentil & potato curry, a super Rich and Creamy coconut custard & biscuit dessert (100% egg & dairy free!)

Over 20 members joined, many tasting these dishes for the first time. The feedback was such Pure joy, with lots of compliments, and members curious about the recipes!

This lunch really showed that plant based meals can and are exciting and delicious, adding variety to the meals we eat on a daily basis, all in a creative way!🔥

The toughest part of my journey from vegetarian to fully plant based;- MILK POWDER.

Had to say goodbye to eggs, dairy and junk, but let’s be real - milk powder is in everything. Even in some crisps?? Why though?!😭

I quickly learned that transitioning to a fully plant based lifestyle meant becoming besties with food labels. For example, have you ever wondered what “may contain” really means?

One of the answers is that the food is processed in the same factory where specific products with milk or eggs are processed, comment if you knew that.

That said, there’s so many amazing plant based alternatives for milk out there, healthy, delicious and there’s no animals needed!

Here’s my top picks for replacing dairy, starting from my most favourite. Macadamia milk (super rich and creamy), coconut milk (perfect for a tropical twist), almond milk, oat milk & soy milk (simplest one to prepare).

Wanna try one of them out? Comment below with the one you’re most curious about, and you could win yourself a liter’s worth in our July giveaway! This page is dedicated to spreading the word of just how much plant based foods add diversity and good tasting health to a meal, not reduce it or make it boring and bland, so let’s grow together as we bring this movement to life🍃

🌱 *Part 2: Embracing the Vegetarian Vibes!* 💃🏽🍄

While diving deep into the world of plant-based living (shoutout to Google and YouTube University 😅), I discovered something wild — you can actually make your own meat from wheat gluten! Yup, you read that right. And guess what? I tried it... and it worked! 💪🏽✨ It wasn’t easy, but biting into something “meaty” that didn’t have to die for my dinner? That felt GOOD.

Gone are the days when being vegetarian meant just beans and chunks (no shade — we love them, just not every day 😆). I found a whole new world of delicious options like:

🍄 Mushrooms
🧄 Tofu
🥣 Lentils
🌱 Fry's meat alternatives..and so much more!

But hey, don't count out the good ol' beans and chunks! With a little creativity and spice, they can transform into next-level dishes you’ll actually crave. 💥🔥

✨ Want me to show you how? Comment below with the dish you’d love me to make first, and I’ll whip it up for you — Totally Plant-Based style!

👉🏽 Stay tuned for Part 3: My journey from vegetarian to full-on plant-based, ditching eggs, dairy, and junk for GOOD — and loving it!

🌱 Story Time: My Journey to a Plant-Based Life 🏡✨

Growing up, special occasions at home meant one thing: the sound and sight of chickens, goats, or lambs being slaughtered for the celebration feast. As a child, something about it never sat right with me. I’d sit quietly, my stomach uneasy, struggling to eat the meat—even though it was lovingly prepared. I preferred store-bought meat because, well… I didn’t have to witness its journey to the plate.

Fast forward to 2020…
Now in my 40s, those old feelings came rushing back, stronger than ever. I found myself really struggling with meat. The texture felt too fleshy, the smell too strong—I was drowning my meals in spices just to cope. Until one day, I paused, looked at my plate, and said: That’s it. I’m done.

Just like that, I went vegetarian.

I didn’t have a roadmap. No guidebook. Just me, my curiosity, and the internet (thank goodness for that, right? 🙌). I dove headfirst into a world I knew nothing about—and I was amazed! So many new ingredients, exciting flavors, and plant-based dishes I never knew existed.

Of course… not every experiment was a winner 😅. Some meals were divine, others… well, let’s just say they were character-building! But through it all, I found joy, growth, and a deeper connection to my values.

🌿✨ This is just Part 1 of my journey ✨🌿
If this story speaks to you, stick around for Part 2—I’ve got so much more to share!

Ever had plant-based food that made you forget it was made from plants?

I’m a plant-based food enthusiast based right here in Bulawayo, and I’ve just kicked off a six-month journey with Thrive Philanthropy to show how plant-based meals can be delicious, accessible, and surprisingly satisfying — using nothing but plants.

We’re exploring what plant-based eating looks like in Zimbabwe, why it matters, and most importantly… how good it can actually taste. And the best part? When the six months are up, we’re throwing a free community tasting event where you’ll get to try the food for yourself!

So if you’re curious about how far veggies can really go, come along for the ride — from behind-the-scenes prep to the final flavor-filled day.
