Is It Decoration or Does It Have a Purpose?

A branch is not always just a branch.

A hide is not simply something that makes an enclosure look interesting.

Good enclosure design gives an animal opportunities to perform natural behaviours such as climbing, hiding, exploring, basking or moving through different areas of its habitat.

That is what enrichment is about.

When choosing branches, vines, hides, plants, rocks and other enclosure features, ask:

“What can my animal actually do with this?”

An attractive enclosure is great.

An attractive enclosure that also supports natural behaviour is better. Research and welfare guidance increasingly recognise environmental complexity and opportunities for natural behaviour as important parts of reptile husbandry.

Bunnies may be small, but they need far more than a cage, a bowl and a few treats.

A good rabbit setup should give them room to move, stretch, stand upright and explore. Rabbits can also become bored easily, so boxes, safe chew items, tunnels and other enrichment can help keep them active.

Diet matters just as much.

Good-quality hay or grass should make up most of a rabbit’s diet, with suitable greens and a smaller amount of pellets. Hay is especially important for digestion and for helping wear down continuously growing teeth.

And don’t forget the heat. Rabbits can struggle in high temperatures, so they need access to shade and a cooler area, especially during warm South African weather.

Before bringing a bunny home, think about space, diet, enrichment and daily care, not just the size of the animal.

Not every exotic pet needs the same kind of home.

Some species need more floor space. Others make better use of height. Heating, lighting, ventilation, access for cleaning and room for enrichment all need to be considered when planning an enclosure.

A custom enclosure should not simply fit the space in your home. It should work for the animal that will live in it.

Reptilia’s leopard gecko care sheet warns that retained shed around the toes can restrict blood flow and cause serious problems.

A humid area in the enclosure can also play an important role during shedding.

Small checks can make a big difference.

If something does not look right, seek advice from a reptile-savvy vet rather than trying to diagnose a medical problem online.

Chinchillas may look soft and cuddly, but their care is quite different from that of many other small pets.

Their dense coat is designed for the cool, dry conditions of the Andes, which means South African heat can be a real challenge for them.

A good chinchilla setup should include:

• A cool, well-ventilated environment
• Plenty of space to climb and jump
• Shelves, branches and hiding places
• Regular access to a proper chinchilla dust bath
• Plenty of good-quality hay and suitable chew items to support dental health
• Fresh water and a balanced diet

One important thing to remember is that chinchillas do not cope well with high temperatures. Keeping their environment cool should be part of the setup before bringing one home.

They are active, intelligent animals with very specific needs, so research and preparation matter.

Think about temperature monitoring, heat control, hiding places, lighting, enrichment and the specific needs of the species.

Snakes are fascinating animals, but they are not all the same.

A corn snake, ball python and boa may all be snakes, but their adult size, enclosure needs, temperatures, humidity and feeding requirements can differ considerably.

That is why choosing a snake should start with research, not appearance.

Before bringing one home, make sure you understand:

• How large the species can grow
• What size enclosure it will eventually need
• The correct heating and temperature range
• Whether humidity needs to be monitored
• What and how often it should be fed
• How long the species may live
• Whether you can provide the same standard of care for its entire life

A secure enclosure, appropriate heating, a thermostat, temperature monitoring, suitable hides, fresh water and the correct diet are all part of responsible snake ownership.

The best time to ask questions is before you buy the animal.
