We believe it is officially bitterballen season at Stoep, and there is only one way to confirm it properly… by coming to try them for yourself at our café. Golden on the outside, rich and comforting on the inside, best enjoyed fresh and shared over good conversation.

Bitterballen have their roots in Dutch café culture, traditionally served as a bar snack alongside a cold drink. Originally made from slow-cooked beef ragout, they were created as a way to use up leftovers in the most delicious way possible, and have since become a much-loved staple in the Netherlands and beyond.

Whether you already know them well or are trying them for the first time, they are best enjoyed the Stoep way. Warm, generous, and impossible to stop at just one.

We learnt a new Dutch saying recently: “de schaar erin zetten” which literally means “to put the scissors in it”. Very practical, very to the point, and honestly… quite relatable.

Sometimes you just have to cut things off, trim things back, or tidy things up and move on. Preferably with good coffee nearby and a bit of humour about it all.

After 11 days without electricity due to the storm, we’re happy to say we are back on and open tomorrow. Our restaurant and shop will both be fully operational again, and we can’t wait to welcome you back.

As the evenings cool down, there’s really nothing better than wrapping yourself in a warm, fluffy blanket. Ours are made for those slower moments, fireside chats, and early nights in.

And somehow, they get even better. Each one rolls up neatly and is tied with a beautifully made strap, practical, easy to carry, and just as good looking as it is comforting.
