Blessed and thankful to be led to raise these animals in the way we believe is right. Animals deserve dignity, respect and care, especially when we are going to nourish our own bodies with theirs after a time. We will forever champion this way of farming.

More and more farmers are recognising the benefits of regenerative agriculture, not only for the health of their land and animals, but for the environment and food system as a whole.

We’ve recently been approached by a number of farmers who would like to introduce regeneratively raised chickens and other animals onto their farms. The challenge they face is finding a market. Regenerative farming is often more expensive than conventional farming, which means farmers can’t simply sell wholesale to supermarkets. The prices supermarkets are able to pay often aren’t enough to make regenerative agriculture financially sustainable.

This is why we need to find new, more holistic ways of buying food, ideally directly from farmers, and where that isn’t practical, through people like us who not only farm ourselves, but also resell products from other local farms.

Buying directly from a farmer isn’t always easy. Farms are often situated ways out of the way in rural areas, down long dirt roads. Many farmers also simply don’t have the facilities, equipment or infrastructure needed to sell directly to the public. In effect, they can’t all become shops.

This is where businesses like ours (who appreciate the effort of regenerative farming and can put a fair price to the food it produces) as well as group-buying initiatives like the food clubs can play such important roles.

By supporting regenerative and local farmers and giving them access to a market, group-buying initiatives, farm-to-table businesses (like ours) and food clubs can help make it possible for more farmers to farm in ways that are better for the land, their animals and the environment.

The more we support these kinds of systems, the more we can move towards a food economy that values not only price and convenience, but also the health of our soil, our landscapes and our communities.

We need more customers to help us support more farmers in their journey towards regenerative agriculture, and in becoming stewards of healthier, more resilient land.
