Bunny number 6
Orientals Durban North

There’s nothing better than eating a bunny chow piping hot, straight after it’s been served. For me, the fresher and hotter, the better!

I got to Orientals in Durban North around 1pm and luckily got a table straight away. The place was busy, but my bunny arrived within about 15 minutes. I went for the 1/3 loaf, and the portion was definitely generous. It was packed with curry and looked really inviting.

The curry had a slightly different flavour to your typical Durban curry, with a noticeable herbal taste that I think came from methi and thyme. It was different, but still tasted good.
The meat portion was also very generous. I got six decent pieces, three boneless and three on the bone. The boneless pieces were really tender, while the bone pieces were a little tougher but still tasty.
The potatoe was spot on, soft and fluffy without being mushy. The bread was fresh and soft and did a great job soaking up the gravy.

The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the amount of food colouring. My charou hands was left yellow😂

At R120, I’d say it’s a solid bunny chow with a generous portion and plenty of meat. I wouldn't put it at the very top but still a good meal.

What really stood out for me again was the service. The staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient, and the customer service was honestly one of the best things about the experience.

Overall: A tasty, generous bunny with great service. Definitely worth trying if you're in Durban North amd ladies use a fork and knife to protect those nails.

I was supposed to have a bunny for supper but my mini me launched me🙁

5th bunny
TSD lounge 20:10

I was going to come here earlier in the day, but time got away from us. I feel like it would be a bit more kid-friendly during the day, so I was a little hesitant to bring Thuraiya here at 8pm. Luckily, they have a quieter indoor seating area, so we were sorted. On the plus side, I had some good tunes to listen to while we waited and ate 😂

The prawn bunny arrived piping hot.
I took my first bite and immediately thought to myself, “Thank God I didn’t try this in JHB, because I wouldn’t be able to make it this good unless I tried quite a few times!”

The gravy was more of a chutney-style gravy, but it was so good. They use prawn meat and are big in size. They put about 10+/- prawns in the bunny but was difficult to count properly because my daughter kept stealing them from the side of the plate 😂
She clearly enjoyed this one more than yesterday’s, which she actually confirmed herself! 😂

TSD’s prawn bunny is R160.
The only thing I would change is the quality of the bread. The crust was quite difficult to tear, unless you hold the bunny with one hand and tear it with the other.
In my opinion, it’s very hard to choose which one is better between TSD and Westbrook. I guess it just depends on where I am geographically at the time!

If anyone in JHB makes a good prawn bunny, let me know!

4th bunny
Goundens 10:40

Ive heard and read so much about the queues at Goundens that I was expecting to stand around for a while. So, heading there at around 10:40am, I was a little worried.

Luckily, there was no queue
All I can say is… WOW

I would have counted the pieces of meat but i was far too busy salivating over the flavour! But let’s just say there was more than enough meat.

The gravy was the star for me. Perfect consistency and packed with flavour. Not too runny, not too thick — just exactly how you want bunny chow gravy to be.
And those potatoes…
Definitely UTD (up to date) and soft as butter.

But there’s something else worth mentioning…
The hospitality from the gents taking your order and serving the food was genuinely heartwarming. Friendly, welcoming and just good old-fashioned customer service.
And this seems to be a common thing in Durban…
Why is the customer service so much better in DBN compared to JHB? 😂

At R115, this bunny is certainly making a strong case for itself as one of the obvious choices in Durban.
But… the weekend isn’t over yet. 👀

Prawn bunny from Westbrook R160

Damn, this is definitely something that is needed in JHB.
Its a mix between a chutney and a curry.
We had the option of mild and hot, we chose hot but luckily it was still manageable.
Flavour was on point with just a hint of sweetness. They use Prawn meat and there was about 10 big prawns. It was cooked perfectly and not rubbery.

At R160 I would definitely pay atleast R200 in JHB for this.

The only negative point i have is the prawns didn't cook in the same curry so it didn't absorb any flavour. Even if they were fried before had for a few minutes with some spices and garlic etc, they would have some flavour.

Looking forward to trying the TSD Prawn bunny tomorrow to see how it compares.

2nd stop for the day
Victory Lounge in Umhlanga

Overall this was a decent bunny, just needed more flavour for me.
Generous portion size, and they definitely didn’t skimp on the meat.

The Lamb: They also utilize the whole lamb, mixed between ribs, chops and boneless. I actually lost count of how many pieces of meat were in here. Unlike the bunny we had earlier today, this one had a mix of smaller and bigger cuts scattered throughout, but bottom line it was packed with plenty of meat.

The Gravy & Potato: The potato was soft, just on the smaĺl side.
Gravy was nice and thick, just needed more flavour for me. No food coloring atleast😁

The Sides: The carrot salad was missing a bit of punch. It needed more time soaking in the vinegar to get that proper bite, and there were no green chillies in it for that extra kick.

Overall...
A fine lamb bunny with great meat volume. Good portions and generous filling, just missing that extra flavour
Buddy 440ml coke was R30 which for me was on the high side.

So here's the plan...
Because we have a couple visits to make, my daughter and I will be sharing a bunny everywhere we go. I know how you'll will put eyes on our food otherwise😂

1st stop 12:45
BP New Germany, Pinetown

Damn! Durban started off strong with an unexpected bunny from a petrol station of all places, imagine if this was around after Mint and Partyhouse back in the day😁
An awesome flavor-packed mutton bunny chow.
Meat: 6 pieces total using full lamb cuts (4 bones and 2 boneless pieces)
Gravy & Potato: Thick, abundant gravy with no artificial food coloring as you can see from the color of my hands😂
The potato was soft, easily breaking apart and soaking up the gravy.
Spice: Hit the perfect middle ground—bold heat without being overpowering. Served with a fresh, tasty carrot salad.
Bread: The size of the bunny was actually more of a 3rd rather than a quarter.

Verdict: A stellar opening stop for a Durban bunny crawl. Great flavor, rich gravy, and authentic comfort food.

The only thing I would change is less bones and more boneless pieces but thats personal preference.
For R95 its well worth it.

Taking a much-needed break and heading to Durban for a few days with my daughter! 🌊🏖️
The Game Plan: A few Indian takeaways, beach time, and proper downtime. 😂
After eating my own cooking for 3 straight years, I cannot wait to step out of the kitchen, try some variety, and enjoy someone else’s food for a change!

I’ve done my research, and I’m sticking mainly to mutton/lamb, and prawn bunnies. How is my hit list looking?
Goundens
Orientals
Happy Chappy
Chettys
Mall Cafe
Westbrook
BP Garage New Germany
TSD

Disclaimer: I’m no food critic! I’ll just be rating them and sharing my honest thoughts. Food is personal—there’s no right or wrong, just my own taste buds talking and what I would spend my own money on again.
Stay tuned! 🍛🌶️

As I wake up for my last day at The Fat Indian, I can’t help but think back to where it all started in November 2023.

I started this journey not really knowing what I was doing, learning as I went along and, in the beginning, definitely paying some school fees along the way! 😂
But somehow, we went from those early days to where I am today, and I can honestly say I’m incredibly proud of what The Fat Indian became.

To my amazing customers — thank you.
Thank you for supporting me week after week, and sometimes day after day. Thank you for choosing my food, recommending me to your friends and family, advertising for me without even being asked, and constantly spreading the word.
Some of you started off as customers and have become lifelong friends, and that is something I will always treasure.

I’m truly humbled that The Fat Indian has been mentioned alongside some of the best in the business — people who have been doing this for as long as I’ve been alive! 😂
Having my own shop was always on my bucket list, and I can confidently say I did it. I built something, made it a success and, most importantly, I enjoyed the journey.
And for those who thought I was completely done collecting medals… I’ve still got one more medal coming in November which i will share! 😁🏅

A massive thank you to everyone who helped me along the way — whether you worked in the shop, helped out behind the scenes, recommended me to someone, shared my posts, posted about the food, or simply supported me with a kind word.
You honestly have no idea how much I appreciate every single one of you.
The Fat Indian has been far more than just a business to me. It has been a chapter of my life filled with hard work, lessons, challenges, amazing food, great memories and, most importantly, incredible people.

As I close this chapter, I want to wish the new owners nothing but success. I hope they enjoy the journey as much as I did and take The Fat Indian to even greater heights.
From tomorrow, 1 October, I will have no affiliation or involvement in the operations of The Fat Indian. I wish the new owners all the best as they begin their journey.

Please continue supporting the shop, and remember — we all had to start somewhere.

Thank you once again to everyone who has been part of this journey.
From the bottom of my heart — thank you.
It’s been one hell of a ride.

Ovesh, out! ❤️
