One Year of Calzones – A Journey of Love, Legacy, and Community
A year ago today, Calzones Pizzeria reopened its doors after a long hiatus. Originally founded in 2013 by Charles Taylor during a lull in the construction industry, Calzones quickly became a beloved spot known for its hand-rolled pizza bases, homemade pasta, and warm, family feel. But after four years, with construction projects ramping up and seasonal slowdowns, Charles made the difficult decision to close in 2017—always feeling like there was some unfinished business.
Fast forward to 2024: after being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing months of chemotherapy, Charles had to step back from construction. Told to rest, but never one to sit still, he found new purpose when he discovered the original Calzones location in Ramsgate Lifestyle Centre was available once more. With support from his wife Steph and daughters Megan and Danika, Charles reached out to former manager Nozipho and chef Abigail. Together, they began rebuilding— sourcing equipment, repurposing furniture, and pouring love into every corner of the space.
Calzones reopened with uncertainty but was met with overwhelming support. Locals and visitors alike returned with kind words and fond memories. But in October, as Charles' health declined, Steph stepped in to help run the restaurant. Tragically, Charles passed away in early November after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving a deep void in our hearts and in the Calzones family. In the midst of grief, Nozi and Abi stood strong, determined to carry on Charles’ dream: “We will do this for Baba”.
The December rush tested the team, but with help from new team members Nathi,
Noxolo and Yolande—angels in disguise—we made it through.
Now, in 2025, the continued support and love from our community has been nothing short of incredible. Charles’ strength and vision brought us together a year ago, as if he knew we'd need each other for the road ahead.
From our Calzones family to yours: Siyabonga. Dankie. Thank you.
Your support means more than words can express. We know Charles is still with us—watching over, making sure Abi’s adding enough spices, and Nozi’s playing the Italian music just loud enough!
