Some pieces simply ask you to stop and look.

This old wood cupboard is one of them. A bank of deep drawers and cupboards, each with its own iron hinge worn soft by years of hands and use, the timber gone to that warm honeyed colour you only get with age and a great deal of living. Look closely and you will find the marks of it all, the small dents and the grain that no factory could ever imitate.

It is the kind of piece that earns its place in a room. Wonderful for a shop or a store, holding everything from linens to provisions, or standing quietly in a hallway or kitchen as the thing everyone comments on. Character like this is becoming harder and harder to find.

A wonderful art inspired weekend in Prince Albert.

There is something rather special about seeing the town so full. This weekend the streets belonged to artists and art lovers, with the gallery open and walkabouts winding from studio to studio, and the whole village seemed to hum with it.

What we love most is that the art does not leave when the weekend does. The galleries, the makers, and the quiet creative spirit of this town are here all year round, waiting to be discovered at a gentler pace. So if this weekend slipped past you, let it be your reason to plan a winter retreat with us soon. Every room at Prince Albert Country Stay is layered with antique details, old linen, vintage furniture, and the sort of collected charm that makes a place feel lived in long before you arrive.

Two Pieces. One Perfect Hallway

A grand shoe cupboard, its original brass keyhole intact, the wood grain deep and warm and entirely unbothered by time. Built in an era when furniture was made to outlast the people who owned it. Colleen is walking you through the Fig Leaf Café and the Prince Albert Country Store, and both are well worth the visit.

Breakfast first. The menu changes with the seasons but the care never does. Think divine breakfasts, freshly baked scones, creamy oats with Nutella and honey, and grapefruit the way it should be served. The kind of morning meal that makes you order a second coffee just to sit a little longer.

The Country Store is its own discovery. A beautiful collection of ceramic vases sits alongside homemade fig jams, locally pressed olive oils, and the kind of biscuits you will absolutely take home. The vases range from bold statement pieces to quiet, elegant forms that work on a dining table, a bookshelf, or a windowsill. Something for every space and every style.

The store that feels like someone's most beautiful life

There are shops. And then there are places like this.The Prince Albert Country Store is not arranged. It is composed. Every corner holds something that has no business being this beautiful — a dressmaker's dummy wearing a century-old lace shawl, a mahogany display cabinet glowing with crystal and silver, oil paintings leaning against walls as though they simply couldn't decide where to hang yet.

The ceramics. The glassware. The framed prints from another era entirely. A wicker chair with a crimson throw draped just so. None of it matches. All of it belongs.

WHEN THE KAROO STORMS ROLL IN, THIS IS THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE RESPONSE

Outside, the Karoo is doing what it does in winter. The sky has closed in. The roads are wet. The mountains have disappeared into cloud and the wind has found every gap it can.

Inside, the Basset Hounds have the right idea.
