Chips (or French fries) have a debated origin, but they are commonly believed to have originated in Belgium or France.

🍟 Belgium: Many historians say that Belgian villagers were frying potatoes as early as the late 1600s. The story goes that when the rivers froze in winter, people started frying potatoes instead of fish, creating the first fries.

🍟 France: The French claim that "pommes frites" (French fries) were first sold by street vendors in Paris in the late 1700s, gaining popularity after the French Revolution.

The name "French fries" became popular in English-speaking countries, possibly because American soldiers in World War I first encountered fries in Belgium, where French was the dominant language.
